You can write a note in the sympathy card stating that you have made a donation to xyz. The family will also receive a receipt from the organization, but it may take a few weeks.

Some organizations have little cards that they give you when you donate. i was at one funeral, where the cards were displayed under a plaque that was given the deceased by the organization. You also use this card for your income tax. Also, there are other organizations that will present a plaque or certificate to the family, with the names of the donors.

If you go to visit at the funeral home, they will have cards.
Otherwise, if you are out of town, send a card to the charity.
Enclose your cheque, & say 'In memory of....(deceased).
Give the family address, if known, or funeral home.
The charity will notify the family, without mention of amount.

Talk to the family directly. While expressing
your grief, let them know that donations can
be given to them directly, if they want. That way, they can use, or donate as they wish.
