I haven't been back to my company's building due to a bad situation there since mid-September. I am leaving now
and have a new job.

I have worked from an alternative location with my
boss's permission.

Do I have to go back for the exit interview with
HR, or is it reasonable to ask to conduct the
exchange by phone and obtain paperwork
by mail or email?

The CEO already said I am welcome to come back at any time when I saw him at a ceremony, so it is not so much for a future recommendation.

I have a no contact order with someone who works there.

If you're in a dangerous situation due to the no contact order issue, then request that you do it by email, phone or a different location. There's no requirement that I know of that you HAVE to do an exit interview at all. Not by law, anyway.

1. Do the exit interview,
2. Do NOT complain about the company or about anyone at the company.
3. Be honest about why you're leaving (better pay, more advancement opportunities, etc).

Remember that you may well end up working for the same manager sometime in the future and/or the same company (it's never known when a company is going to get taken over by someone else).

Leave on good terms .. don't leave any reason why anyone would not want to (or be willing to) rehire you!

Good luck in your new job! Hope this helps!

When I left my previous job (nearly 15 years ago now), they requested I do an exit interview. I did it and took the opportunity to explain my dissatisfaction with my department head and tell an unvarnished account of why I chose to leave the company.

i did the same thing at my last joba dn that was exactly what i was wondring....the truth is if you want a better job and you dont want he manager to still be up set if he gets called by your new employer than you should go for the exit interview..it just settles everything out into good terms.

If it is a matter of personal safety, you don't have to go back..or an extreme situation....but if you are just being petty you should go back...it is the adult thing to do and your boss was helpful allowing you to work from a different location.

Only you know the reason....

I would go back. It would be the mature thing to do. Keep in mind, you need their recommendations for future jobs. Be an adult and suck it up. Go back and take care of business.

You can ask, but if they have requested an exit interview, they will probably want you to go in.
