This is just for Jehovah's Witnesses. I have a question brothers and sisters, its about parties. Well im hispanic and when we have parties we usually dance. We have a variety of music like Salsa, Merengue, Cumbia, Bachata etc. We have a pretty good time dancing and I was wondering what a friend had told me about our American brothers who have parties. He said that he went to a party made by an american brother, and he was telling me about the music they had at the party. They put and danced rap, hip-hop and i dont remember what others types of music they had. He felt really bad cause we're not supposed to be listening to these types of music and not even dance them, so he asked another brother and he told him that they had no other choice cause they dont have other music to dance. Their only option was that type of music, So my question is: Does this happen at all the parties that our American brothers have??? or these people were just spitually sick??? or is not bad at all?

Thats a good question, only I don't have an answer becasue I have never been to an "American" social gathering. They have all been Spanish congregations and have played Latin music with Clean lyrics.PERHAPS, they were spiritually weak. The good thing is, you noticed it was wrong to liten to that type of music which is a good sign, your conscience is well trained.=]

Just to add a little bit.

It's a question of morality not music or dance, and that always comes down to the individual.

My only negative comment is the brother's excuse that they had no other choice. Whether they are spiritually sick or not, I don't know. I am fairly sure that they didn't even consider various ballroom dances which include Salsa and Merengue as well as Foxtrots and Waltz. They really are a lot of fun. But, there are always choices.

The type of music is not wrong in itself, it's the lyrics. There is nothing wrong with those "American" types of music if the lyrics are clean.

You can have a song with the use of instruments used at our meetings, but if the lyrics are bad, then it's a no-no.

Even that Hispanic music you mention, there are obviously methods of dancing to it that would be immoral. So it's all about balance and avoiding stumbling others.

I went to a Get together last night and the friends Spanish and American were dancing for hours I wanted to dance too.
but shy, friends had a great time.
music was modest, not racy.if the brother felt bad about what he was hearing it was time for him to leave, talking to any elders there would be good too. if no elders present, good indicator of spiritual problems,
we had a article sometime last year with good info on this
let your bible trained consciences guide you.

Jehovah God wanted us to use his name. Matthew 6:9, Jesus told us that we should pray: "Our Father in the heavens, let your NAME be SANCTIFIED." Also Isaiah 43:10 also brings out that Jehovah said, "You are my WITNESSES." God is a Title. Even with Arabs. A good dictionary will show you, “Allah” is a shortened form of the Arabic term meaning “the god", this is not a name. The title “God” is neither personal nor distinctive. In the Hebrew Scriptures the same word (ʼElo‧him′) is applied to Jehovah, the true God, and also to false gods. The Imperial Bible-Dictionary says: “It is everywhere a proper name, denoting the personal God and him only; whereas Elohim partakes more of the character of a common noun, denoting usually, indeed, but not necessarily nor uniformly, the Supreme. . . . The Hebrew may say the Elohim, the true God, in opposition to all false gods; but he never says the Jehovah, for Jehovah is the name of the true God only. He says again and again my God . . . ; but never my Jehovah, for when he says my God, he means Jehovah. He speaks of the God of Israel, but never of the Jehovah of Israel, for there is no other Jehovah. He speaks of the living God, but never of the living Jehovah, for he cannot conceive of Jehovah as other than living.” Hope This Helps

The important thing to watch out for in songs and music is unclean lyrics which glorify immorality. It's pretty difficult to find that in the music of today but if they did - I see nothing wrong personally with the styles of music they chose. Also, one must keep modesty in mind during dancing.

Well i think that it depends on the brothers who are making the party. Like over here in texas the american brothers usually have country, rap (clean) and they also have games so i think it mostly depends on how spiritually the brothers are!

Having parties for brothers and sisters to enjoy good recreation is getting harder and harder these days. I organised a party for my friends nearly two years ago and after it i swore i would never ever do it again, due to the stress that it caused me. My taste in music is not necessarily the same as someone else's. If someone came to the party and felt that the music was "worldly" and inappropriate then they had the free will choice to leave. I had two elders to assist in supervision. As the organiser of the event the responsibility for any unruly behaviour landed upon me.

If you think about it the same rules apply if you went out to a Nightclub (i'm not recommending this - just using it as an example) - they have "doormen/bouncers" to deal with unruly behaviour and remove such - if anything untoward happens the responsibility ends up with the "owner" of such a place.

The society had a great WT i think someone has already referred to it here where they give us great "guidelines" to follow. They are not saying DO THIS or DONT DO THAT - again, its all down to our own concience at the end of the day. Jehovah sees everything that goes on, if our concience is clear and you feel that you have done nothing untoward then enjoy your get together. If you are a guest at a party and you do not like the music or you think people are behaving in a "worldly" fashion then leave. I guarantee you that if something "wrong" does happen at these places its not long before the problem is dealt with and if it isn't then remember who is always watching.

My sister went to USA a few years ago and she attended some parties or get togethers at bro's and sis's homes and she had a great time - we're from Scotland - there are cultural differences everywhere we go. Would it be bad to attend a get together in some of our african countries where sister's wear very little clothes - does that mean that they are spiritually weak???? no it does not. Jehovah made us all different if we were all the same wouldn't life be soooo boring. Embrace the differences of our brothers around the world. Its fascinating.

I recommend looking at the Watchtower library for information regarding music.

I've been to dances that did not feature rap.
