Northwest Airlines/KLM accept hamsters as cargo and KLM has an excellent animal hotel facility at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport for when they arrive (see links below) .

As far as I know, hamsters will usually curl up comfortably in a container with sufficient material to hide in.
I'm not sure what and how much to feed them before an intercontinental flight, but any vet could help you with that.
Also, be sure to check the animal health and quarantine requirements of the country you're travelling to.

There's a teacher at my school that has friends over in the netherlands. Their little girl has a hamster and I'm pretty sure they aren't allowed to take it with him due to airline policy. However, every airline is different. Your best bet is to call the airline you're traveling with and ask what their policy about hamsters and such is.

Airlines usually don't accept rodents. Ask your airline but I am afraid the answer will be no.
