Paralysis occurs when the spinal cord is severed. One of the most common causes is diving head first into a too shallow pool or other body of water. The cervical spine snaps, and everything below the fracture is paralyzed. It takes quite a blow to actually fracture your spine. Just your stretching and popping the kinks out of your back shouldn't hurt you. Don't let someone who doesn't know what they are doing twist your spine or pick you up and shake you. It might cause injury to the intervertebral disks--this could lead to a world of hurt.
