I moved from New Orleans about one year prior to Katrina and now am wanting to return, but I need to know from other locals, what is the city like? Has it returned to what it was or has it changed too much to recognize? Also, how bad have insurance rates on houses raised? This will be tremendously important when deciding my price range for a new home. Thank you for all your help.

no the city is pretty much back to normal except the hard hit areas lil 9th ward. insurance is through the roof and the only insurance company writng new policies in the state insurance. i bought a house about 1 hour south of the city and my insurance is almost as much as my house note. and apartment prices have gone up too. i would not suggest you move back unless you are going to be finacially sucure in your job because the cost of living in the city have went up. they are also building a very nice subdivions in luiling you may want to check there for a new home

It actually looks better the it did pre-katrina because everybody pitched in and it looks a lot cleaner because the city hired a new cleaning compony.

I just returned from a visit there, and saw a little bit of everything. The Quarter was basically the same, but not nearly as populated as it used to be. I have never seen Cafe DuMonde half empty! But then since the football games are coming, it was very crowded the last couple days. Insurance is going to be high, but if you find a house you like, you'll just have to get a quote before you buy. There seem to be jobs available all over. Best wishes! The food is fantastic!
