As a feminist, I believe that by wearing a headscarf, women are less seen as an object, and more of a person. I know about five women who CHOOSE to wear a scarf because of the very same reason. They would rather be appreciated for their personality and thoughts rather than their looks. And as for the last question, I think that our society simply isn't ready to fully accept that concept.

Sorry to use a simile I used about 20 questions ago but to me this is apples and oranges. It may indeed by unfair but you can't judge it that way. The nun wears hers out of devotion to her faith. The Muslim woman wears it because her holy book says she must. There is no devotion in that, the book says she must so she must! Look to Afghanistan under the Taliban. What happened to women who dared allow an ankle or a bit of hair to be on display. Well the word I get is that she was beaten on the street with whips by the...whatever it is they called their modesty police. When was the last time you heard of a nun being beaten because they decided to wear the knee length habits rather than the floor sweeping ones. As far as the more modern in valuing human values part of your question...Do you really believe that? Do you enjoy keeping your wife completely covered from head to toe and following behind you at a respectful distance or dressed in a fashionable manner holding onto your arm as a partner? Well never mind, its a no brainer for me, I opt for the partner every time and I truly respect the nun even if I haven't know that many. Ya'll have a Happy New Year now...

The main reasons why the Nuns and Muslim Women are different are : [1] Nuns wear the coif and the scapular to cover their shaved heads. Muslim women don't have shaved heads. [2] Nuns do not make a Political statement of their support to the Wahhabi Fundamentalists by wearing hijab, but, those Muslim women wearing it do. [3] Not only in France, but, everywhere in the World, people have to live by the Laws of the Land. If you can have a husband and wife given 100 lashes for kissing in the UAE, and women being being whipped and caned for wearing pants in the Islamic Countries, then, what's wrong with France enforcing its Law, where they don't whip or cane you? Go to the Islamic Countries and see who are the Racists. If you like it there, then why stay here? .

the question with a head scarf or burkha is why is she weirng it if a woman chooses to dress that way that is not an issue. For example this one Muslim student in Alaska I knew used to wear a bukha out side and just a scarf inside while a woman in Afghanistan under the taliban would be beaten for just wearing a head scarf.
I'm not going to condem some one for choosing to wear a burkha.

To Jean:
"Is it modern to beat your wife? It says it's OK in the Koran."
I believe that this was not the question. Anyways, there is a debate about the exact meaning of "beating" in the Koran. There seems to be some consensus about "slight beating" under those CIRCUMSTANCES explained by that verse. In other words, God does not say to men, whenever you wake up in the morning, the first thing to do is to beat your wife. I myself found it puzzling how would God instruct men to beat up women.
Interesting enough though, domestic violence against women in Muslim societies is not any more rampant than it is elsewhere. In fact those who do beat their wives do not do so because the Koran instructs them. It is usually due to disagreements, perhaps the same disagreements that would arise in any culture, e.g. financial, having conflicting interests, etc.
In the few Muslim countries that I visited, I noticed a great deal of respect for women. In public buses, it is not uncommon that men leave their seats for women if they were standing. In some countries like Saudi Arabia, however, women cannot even drive. That is shameful. I believe God would agree with me.
I am not saying the above to justify the "beating" in the Koran. I do, however, believe that Muslims would find it offensive that you jumped onto that "beating" verse even though it was not the question. The aim, it appears, is to demonize a religion with which you may disagree.
If you read the Koran, as I did, you may also find that there are many positive statements about women. In fact, Muslims believe that if a child does not respect his mother, he would not go to Heaven. As it is said, Heaven is under the feet of mothers.
I believe that Muslims should address this beating thing. I disagree with it. Given the situation of domestic violence in Muslims countries, however, that "beating" appears to have remained mostly theoretical.
To Darth Mohammed:
"When a muslim woman wears a headscarf it is to keep from being raped and beaten by muslim men... big difference from the nuns. (The priests aren't interested in the nuns anyways)"
That is not an accurate statement. You give the impression that if women do not wear the head scarf in the Muslim world, men will rape them. Not true. In most Muslim countries, there is duality. Some women wear hijab others dont. Rape and and beating as you implied it, does not happen. (perhaps few cases which I believe had nothing to do with scarf).
Muslims see short dress as indecent so they encourage long dress and head scarf. It is their view with which you do not have to agree. You like skirts, that is fine. However, I would encourage you to be a little bit more cutlure sensitive.
To peasoup:
"Everyone knows the nun chose to be a nun. No pressure. You just can't always be sure about a Muslim woman's choice. Especially in, say, Iran or Saudi Arabia. Anyway, hardly any nuns wear veils anymore."
As far as I know, wearing the head scarf is a choice. Religious men usually prefer their wives, sisters etc to wear it. Less religious men, dont. I know of religious men whose wives dont actually wear the hijab. So it depends.
There were caseswhere religious fanatics threatened women to wear it. That is not the rule, however.
Like nuns, muslim women wear head scarf by their own choice. It is their culture. I believe we should not look down on them because they chose a way of life due to their own understanding of morality. It is different, it is not wrong.
To pagan:
"Muslim women are forced to wear the scarf. a Muslim woman can face death if she does not."
that is not correct. As i said above, there were few cases where women were forced but not the rule. Society does put pressure on women, however. This is the same in societies where women dress up in certain way and follow fashion. Marketing and how men view an ideal woman's dress put pressure on those women.
Again, in Muslim societies, there are millions of women who do NOT wear the head scarf. The number is less in places like Iran and S Arabia. Even then I would think that it is their culture, their traditional dress.
In some Muslim countries, I even saw many women with min skirts. And no one threatened them at all. In universities, women are open and follow fashion as is the case elsewhere.
I found it acceptable to wear a long dress with head scarf. I found it annoying to cover the face as some women do in Afghanistan and Middle East. Women look very strange. I would think that is extremism and should be stopped.
I also found it acceptable that women do not wear the head scarf. It is a choice and they should not be intimidated.

nuns wear wimples - not head scarves.
second point: i have never encountered someone who says a Muslim woman shouldn't wear a headscarf.
what i have heard is that it should be the woman's individual choice. a nun accepts the calling to become a nun and willingly devotes her life to her calling. she CHOOSES to wear the wimple.
Muslim women are forced to wear the scarf. a Muslim woman can face death if she does not.
i think most of us who understand this difference only wish that Muslim women had the choice to wear a scarf. we see it as unfair to the Muslim woman to be forced to cover her face.
personally, i think it is beautiful when a Muslim woman wears a scarf - AND - when a nun wears a wimple. but if it is not the woman's choice to do so out of devotion to God, then it isn't for religious observation - it is simply to obey the law.
i think your question and its generalizations are way off base.

Actually in my personal opinion nuns are a bit deranged, and very few of them wear head scarves these days anyway.
