Not all do it but when they do its an instict taking over, cats in the wild eat as much as possible and hide the rest to come back to later so its just a leftover wild instinct

Cats are marking their territory so that other cats know that that location is theirs...most animals will do this, like bears leave scratch marks on trees...deer will scratch in a spot with their hoof, and pee in it to mark their territory...things like that. Lots of my parents outdoor cats would scratch on trees outside to mark their territory.

I always thought my Stinky was the only cat who ever did that (my other cats never did). I guess he isn't so weird afterall. At least, not for that,anyway... :p

They're "burying" the leftovers for later. If they bury the leftovers, no one will come take it. My cats do that.
