Choosing a dog that has a good temperament. Sometimes it's kind of hard to tell what kind of pet it will become when it gets older. All puppies are "cute" and adorable, but not all will grow into being friendly, intelligent, or playful pets. Some breeds are known for certain problems with temperament, and choosing a puppy wisely can hopefully prevent having to deal with issues later on (like aggressiveness, biting, etc.) If you can spend time with the puppy's parents first, do so...that would be my advice. By observing the parents of the puppy, you will get insight into what kind of pet the puppy will be. It helps, too, to read whatever material you can get your hands on when it comes to the breed you choose. For instance, if you choose a breed such as a Rottweiler or a German Shephard, there are things you really need to know in regard to training these animals, so that they are safe pets around children and strangers. (You don't want lawsuits later on!)

Good luck!

Nothing because I want the dog to start with. If you have concerns or worries about getting a pet, then wait.

Well I am in the process of getting a dog and i am worried:
1. how they will react to kids
2. what dieses they have
3. who to give them 2 when going away
4.how to know their temperment
What i did is i looked at a million dog books. then i will visit a few kennels of my chosen breed and see hwo the dogs act.
REMEBER NEVER EVER BUY FROM A BREEDER THAT BREEDS MORE THAN TWO TYPES AND ASK TO SEE THE DOGS PARENTS! DONT BUY FROM PET STORES BECUZ THERE IS A HUGE CHNACE THEY ARE UNHEALTHY!!!

my first concern, his health, if indoor dog you want him
to be housebroken and non-destructive, for that you
would want an adult dog.
if children are involved you want a breed of dog that
is good for kids.
the dogs safety, God forbid you don,t want him to
get loose and get hit by a car.
i look at a dog the way i would a person. regarding my dog
that passed away people said i treated her like a person.
i hope this helps.

is it good with kids, people, other pets? does it fit my family lifestyle? a chihuahua wouldn't work for us, we need bigger dogs that can go hiking and camping. a dog that bays would make me nuts, a scary looking dog would scare other campers, long hair would get messy, not too big that it would squash the kids. we chose 2 mutts, aussie mixes, from the pound and so far they are both a good fit for our family.

That it might not like people and end up mauling some poor child at the park while I have my back to it and I don't get to the child in time to stop it and there is blood everywhere and I have to kill the dog with my bare hands...

One time I got a puppy that had hookworms because they didn't worm them properly and now everytime I get a dog I am afraid of whether the seller is selling me a healthy dog.

If I am capable of properly taking care of it.
Animals are special and do not deserve to be neglected in any way.
