have a male neutered Jack Russell terrier, which of course needs a lot of exercize. We were taking him to dog park to run around, but had to stop as he would inevitably attack some other dog(s) and we were afraid he would hurt them. I'm wondering if a muzzle would give us peace of mind to let him run around, without fear that he will rip some other poor pup? Would it interfere with his cooling system? Any other considerations? The dog park we go to has a separate fenced-off area for small dogs like him, so it's not a concern that some Rottweiler will think he's a chew toy....thanks for your ideas!

Well a muzzle has to be loose enough to allow panting which means he will probably be able to at least nip. Your dog obviously has some dog aggression issues. It's not fair to the other people at the park for you to bring your dog in. He could traumatize any young dogs that are there for socializing by attacking it whether he was muzzled or not. He could injur or kill someone's dog which is awful for them and extremely bad for you and your dog (legally and financially for you and life-threatening for your dog). Isn't there somewhere you can take him without other dogs? If not, maybe an obedience instructor with experience in dog aggression would be a good idea. Actually, either way that's a good idea. Just tell every instructor you contact exactly what you need and ask if they have had experience with it. You want someone who has dealt with this repeatedly, aggression in terriers being a plus (attitude is a terrier trait). Good luck with your dog.

A jack russel terrier should never be off the leash unless fully trained including how to act towards other dogs. My dog is mixed terrier but have all the characteristics of a jack russell terrier and while doing research on her they all said they should never be off the leash. While walking her I realized why, JRT's have been known to kill small dogs in a fight and I know my dog can't resist a fight with an unknown dog. A muzzle is inhumane and will only make things worse. Try socializing the dog. My dog has gotten better after being socialized.

either give him a muzzle or bring a bunch of toys to keep him busy. If you decide to use the muzzle make sure you give your dog breaks from it by taking him away from any near dogs and then taking it off. If you decide to bring a lot of toys you should make sure that while he is playing no other dogs should be near him. This is because, he could get territorial and may attack the dogs. Actually, his main problem may be that he loves you sooo much that he is protecting you and already being territorial over you! Remember that the hotter the weather the easier any dog will get agitated so on hot days always carry loads of water with you.

I have actually SEEN agresssive dogs use the muzzle as a battering ram to pummel other dogs. It won't work .... Long flexi lead or take him to the dog park in an "off" hour when noone else is there.

My german shepherd/husky mix had the bad habit of bitting dogs on their necks (not viciously but in a playful manner). I got him a Comfort Muzzle at Petsmart and put it on him when we go to the dog park. He can't open his mouth enough to grab hold of another dogs neck, however he can still pant, drink water, and play with the other dogs. He gets it off every now and then, but they are so easy to put on and take off, it's not a hassle. They are just a nylon collar with velcro on the back one goes around the neck and the other goes over the muzzle. I really like it and he doesn't seem to mind wearing it.

try a muzzle, only at the park though! my dogs HATE muzzles with a passion. you could also call a dog trainer for some ideas to help. im not a dog whisperer, but maybe he gets anxiety when he is around other dogs? try to get him calm before going to the park. hope i helped!

If your dog has aggression issues he should NOT be at an offleash dog park until the issue is resolved, you are adding frustration and making the situation worse.
If you have no experince with aggressive dogs, I would advise you consult a behaviorist before you make this poor pooch even worse!!

An "Italian Basket" muzzle would allow panting very easily, since it doesn't hold the muzzle closed like many muzzles. There is a link below so you can see what they look like.
