You should only eat enough to get you through your work out. Like protein.

If you eat before you workout all you'll be burning are the calories you just ate.

But don't work out on an empty stomach.

Eat but don't pig out...after your body has recovered from the workout.

I'd eat a little beforehand if you're hungry, because it will ruin your workout if you're hungry. However, you do have to ingest quick burning protein (chocolate milk or Myo-Plex are good ones) in order to help your muscle repair themselves. Basically if you do not, a lot of the work you just did will be lost or less effective.

after, because exercising and not eating before sends your body almost into starvation mode so when you eat after a workout, your body burns the food like crazy.

depends what you goals are for how much but typically for cardio you want carbs and protien an hour to an hour and a half before to give your body glycogen(only carbs give you glycogen, protien will only help prevent catabolism) so that your energized for it (if your trying to lose fat then just limit how much carbs you get), and protien asap after (to prevent catabolism). For resistance and weight training you want protien 30 min b4 and protien+high gi carbs 30 mins after.
