I live 2 houses down from a neighbor, who has a driveway and since they have moved in, for the last 4-5 years, she has run a babysitting business and all her clientele turn around in our driveway. I have asked them not to and it got worse. I was sitting in my car today on the cell and she turned around in our driveway while i was sitting in my car.

if she didn't have all her clientele and friends turning around in my driveway, it wouldn't be so bad. but to me..this is just rude.

since the neighborhood is not zoned for business, and she probably isn't paying taxes on this, i don't want to start a lot of problems, but have had enough. what do you think i should do? I have never talked to her directly about it. but should.

thank you for all your responses...I went and talked to her. She said she has a single car driveway and I have a double and there's never any cars there. She said she is leaving in a year and half. I was nice..I had left her flowers over thanksgiving, but she didn't know who they were from, so i had good intro. she said she would talk to her clients, and said today, she was very careful not to go over the sidewalk...not true, but oh well.

some of you wonder why it's aggravting, I come home sometines and have to wait for her turn arounds to get out my driveway and have left in the am and open up the garage and theres someone turning around. since she has est. 3-5 cars a day there and her own turn arounds it gets aggravating. No I don't sit and watch...this is what I happen to see when i get home from work or leaving or coming or going.

Thank you for your advice!

Post a small sign by your driveway, Private Drive No Turn Around, and go speak to her about it.

If she is running a business in a residential area with no license, esp a daycare, she could get into trouble if she is caught. Daycare centers are pretty well regulated and inspected, and must have a license.

Park your car at the end of the driveway for a while, to discourage them. If it is there, they can't turn around, can they?

If it was one or two cars a week then it would be alright but you are talking several cars a day right? Causing wear and tear on your driveway that you pay to keep maintained.
You've never talked to her about it, why not? You can't expect her to know it worries you if you haven't told her.
If nothing is done after you speak to her, send her a letter citing your objections to constantly having her clients, friends and herself turning in your driveway. Make sure you keep a copy - it'll come in handy if she continues to do so. Find out what your legal rights are, you could also put a camera up to keep a record of just how many cars per day are doing this. You need to have proper evidence before taking this further, even if it's just to bill her for repairs to your drive.

I'd want to know what you mean by 'turning around'. Do you have a circular drive? Are they coming on to your property to turn around? Or, are they turning into your driveway, meaning the front wheels up the driveway ramp and over the sidewalk...but not actually IN your driveway? Are they damaging anything? Running over the grass? Do you frequently have kids playing out there and your concerned for their safety? You don't have to be zoned for a business to run a daycare out of your home, at least in most cities.

Without knowing these things, I'd say you sound petty and you need to find better things to do than watch your driveway all day. It's just a driveway. And where is all the drama from? You have not even talked to this person yet and you are already angry!

Giving you the benefit of doubt, if it's a true invasion of your property and your worried about your kids playing out there, then a polite conversation would be o.k. I'm sure she doesn't even realize her clients are doing it. Start by being friendly and tell her your concerns. I'm sure she'll be happy to tell her clients to find another way to turn around before her neighbor goes all postal.

I have the same problem. Put up a sign and still do it. parked the car at end of driveway and still did it. today i was out blowing snow and when i went to do my neighbors they did it while i was standing there. They could see i was clearly upset but did it anyway. WHAT ARE YOU SUPPOSE TO DO WHEN THEY USE YOUR DRIVEWAY MORE THAN YOU DO FOR A TURN AROUND. i PAY GOOD MONEY TO KEEP OUR DRIVE IN GOOD SHAPE AND FOR WHAT. tHEY ARE RUDE AND JUST PLAIN DON'T CARE. I want to call the police but not much they can do. its very frustrating. I guess i will have to park the car with the back of it right at the road.

If you have covenants you have an the opportunity to force them to follow them. If you don't you will have to continue to work with her on this issue. One on one is never easy. That is why I like living in communities with covenants. These types of issues are taken care of by rule and committees. It is unfortunate that your neighbor has so little regard for your personal space but if you are home and see this happening your best choice is to go out and tell those people using your driveway not to do it again and take your chances. Better to work it out with those who are abusing rather than your neighbors since they have ignored your reguests.

I would talk to her about it. There were some people who were in my neighborhood that would these put holders in their driveway during the day so people didn't turn around in it, they were nice and looked decorative, not too out of place. When they were having people over or needed to get in they would remove them. If that doesn't work I would report her, but that's just me. I think it is very rude!!!

A few days ago, I would've said, post an angry sign, or go there and start a verbal fight. But, I read this book, which might help u in going about this problem. THis book, is not good only for this situation, its a must read in life. "How to win friends and influence people by Dale Carnegie. For example, it will tell u how to get a person to do what u want, and make them want to do it. Theres numerous solutions to problems like these. So read it. And, i'll give my personal opinion. Why do u want them to not turn around there. Are they ruining ur pavement or what. Life is built on people giving. They're not hurting u in any way, I can understand if they honk when they turn. So be kind, unless they're doing something awful to ur driveway, let it be. They're not doing this to hurt. Think of it as being proud that ur driveway is being used as a turning point, or something like that. I dunno, don't make it into a bad thing.I hope I helped, and remember, read that book, it will help.

Put down some stop sticks and then see how many times she continues to do this...you also need to talk to her directly and if all else fails (I don't know if you can get those sticks but police depts use them) put a chain up over the driveway and little pyramid shaped stones around.
