Quran is not easy to understand unless one knows the background incident about which a particular Surah was revealed. Every chapter is basically a lecture of God. Sometimes He addresses to Prophet, some times to Momineen (Muslims), some times to Jews (Bani Israel), sometimes to Ale-Imran (Christians) and some times to
Pagans of Mecca (Kafiroon). Prophet Mohammad whom every chapter was revealed knew the background and reasons for which particular Surah was revealed to him. So he always explained to his companions.

Read Quran that has a good Tafseer (explanation) in English.
I recommend the following two:

1. The Message of Quran - The full account of the Revealed
Arabic Text Accompanied by Parrallel Transliteration.
By Mohammad Asad (a former Jew, WWII corresspondent
for New York Times.
In it every page has four sections on every page.
1. Arabic Text 2. Pronunciation of text in Roman English
3. Translation
4. Explanation of the message.

It is heavy, little large size with 1164 pages. It has the best index I found it best source for research.

2. Holy Quran with Trasnslation and Explanation by
A. Yusuf Ali (a Muslim from India) wrote this translation
ahen he was in Lonon doing his Ph.D
This has translation in English of biblical style.
Widely used by English Speaking people.

I use both translations but when I am doing research on some Ayah I refer to the first one also.

If you want to find good books on Islam I recommend the following two online sources.

www.astrolabe.com
www.Islamicity.com (look for Islamic Book service on this site. If you don't find it check in a large Mosque in big cities of USA. There is always a book store nearby Mosque.

May Allah bless you with the knowledge you seek about Islam.

it is the most holy book of Islam ~ we are having a revival at my church this week and the sermons every night are going to be about how the Koran is different from the bible ~ how Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior is different from Buddha and Islam.

As newly aquited to Islam, I'm sure it is difficult for you to undrestand. You need to get a simpler translation of the Qur'an with commentary, you need to get other booklets made for the new comers to Islam...like Introduction to Islam and Qur'an.

Please visit www.islam.org this a comprehensive site which will help you with your studies of the religion.

The person to talk to is an Imman. Nobody can explain the Sacred Koran better than them.

Yes, it is a very complicated book. There is much written about it in another book, which is The Book of the Lamb. Perhaps you would be better off studying this book?
