I will be a first time traveller to Hong Kong from Melbourne Australia.
Which hotel would be a comfortable and good quality, and near shopping and day trips.
I am not looking for cheapness, but not over the top either. I like to be close to tourist things, rather than off the beaten track.
I have checked out many on the websites, however experiences and recommendations are usually the best way. Thanks in advance to all who can assist.
Happy New Year.

If you are in kowloon side, i would suggest Langham Place hotel. It is a new hotel, depending on what time of year you come in, it could be well withing your budget. It is in mong kok, about 30 minutes by bus from the airport. If you take the airport train, there is a special station around the district, there are buses provided by the hotel that will take you from the station. The hotel is in a street after nathat rd. I forgot the name but you can take the underpass or cross the street from there into sai young choi street. That is where all the electronics stores are. Then one street after that, will be the open market as well as all the shoe stores. From the hotel, you will also be able to take the train to any other point in hong kong. My suggestions for transport is to take the train to whatever district you want to go to, and take a cab back to the hotel so you don't have to carry all your stuff. There is a ferry, but it is out of the way of all the shopping areas. You could take it across, to wanchai or central, but the nearest shopping area is about 10 minutes away, mostly people take the ferry from tsim sha tsui to get pictures and then come right back for more shopping.

Knowing what you want, I recommend without hesitation the Metropark Kowloon. Good business-style hotel, great service, perfect location near Kowloon Tong, pool and fitness centre, internet, etc. They also have a free shuttle going to some of the nearby areas. A double room can be negotiated for about 700HKD.

I stayed there last August with my two teenage daughters and they loved that hotel. They had a blast, and the pool and fitness centre was great, especially at the end of a long day.

You can try Novotel Century Harbourview or the Novotel Century Hong Kong. Both hotel are near to harbor and they are quite accessible by public transport and the rates are affordable. The Novotel Century Harbourview faces the harbour itself and its about 5 to 10 minutes bus ride to Sheung Wan MTR Station. The Novotel Century Hong Kong is located at Wanchai and its within walking distance from the MTR station and the star ferry pier is just nearby. Both are located at the Hong Kong Island side and many tourist attraction are nearby, like the Midlevels and The Peak, which locates in between both of the above hotels mentioned.

Stay at Tsim Sha Tsui, you can see a great view of the harbour. I believe the hotel is called Pensinla, excuse my spelling.
