To make it worse, the verse says, "Be perfect as your Heavenly Father is perfect." How can we be that perfect. The answer is the word translated as perfect is the Greek word "teleilos", meaning "complete". The context of the verse is that Jesus is telling people how to lead a good life in many areas. They should try to improve consistently, and more important, be a person of integrity, charity, courage, self-control, and many other qualities. They should be "complete". So in this verse, perfect does not mean sinless, which is impossible, but a whole and rock-solid person.

When you accept Jesus Christ as your personal Savior, then the Holy Spirit of God resides in you. God is perfect (the Holy Spirit of God is perfect). The Holy Spirit is your teacher, counselor, and guide, so it is the Holy Spirit that helps you to be like Jesus. Only Jesus can perfect you. So what you need to do is, strive to follow the teachings of Jesus and do the best you can. Ask God, the Holy Spirit, to help you when you need help. Ask Him to give you wisdom so you can make wise decisions. And above all, 'love as He has loved you.' This keeps you on the journey of perfection. If you belong to Jesus, you will do well. Don't worry, just put your trust in Him. Jesus loves you.

Your question is relation to the scripture Matthew 5:48.
Mainly, Jesus wasn't saying to be perfect as in being "flawless". In the Bible the word "perfect" carries the idea of being complete. Jesus was explaining to his followers on how to love and be more complete in their love.

Follow Gods direction and one day you will be perfect.but God knows that there is a lot of imperfect steps we will make before we get there. God is perfect and to live for him you should be a women or man after Gods own heart. being faithful to God through life. practice in prayer and in Gods Word the Holy Bible will bring you to perfection.

It's usually a mistranslation. The manuscripts say "mature". For example, be a mature Christian by getting off the milk and into the meat of the Word ... or be a doer of the Word, not just a hearer of it.

Perfect in this instance, means complete. And yes, we are called to be complete in the way we live.
We were made in the image of God, we are called to live in that image, and Jesus exampled that image for us.
Being made perfect, as God is perfect, means that our lives are to conform to the image in which we were originally intended to live. It does not mean sinless perfection except as an extension of living life as we were called to live it.

To add to that:
Humans are supposedly sinners; being born is a sin in itself. So how would it be possible, in the Christian belief, to be 'perfect'?
