I would just like to make it clear that I am not feeding my rats a pumpkin, I am just giving them a mini one to play with, toss around, and chew on. It stimulates their little minds.

Yes it is safe for our pet rats to eat raw pumpkin and the seeds inside them just as they are. For the majority of rat-keepers who have had rats for awhile we share photos of our rats at Halloween featuring them with pumpkins. I like to cut a small hole in the side of a huge pumpkin to encourage the rats to chew their way inside.

Yes, pumpkin can be a laxative for some rats, and yes, my rats always need a bath after they have played with their pumpkin.

Rats eat anything...chewing on a pumpkin or its seeds is not poison. People can eat raw pumpkin and seeds and it would not hurt them. (Although why anyone would do it is beyond me!!)

Well, they sell pumpkin seeds in the supermarkets and health food stores.. They are quite tasty, but think they should be dried a bit before eating.. I prefer to have them roasted a bit as it brings out the flavour..

Rats can eat basically anything. I wouldn't give them too many seeds because they can be poisonous in large quantities when raw, but otherwise I wouldn't worry about it.

Yes, they are completely healthy.

Most bagged rat foods have pumpkin seeds in them.

I use this food:

It has pumpkin seeds in it, and is a high quality food, that my ratties love!
