I'm in the same boat as you, proverbially speaking. I have a fish farm in Albany, Georgia and have been infested with otters this year. I too have had 6 in a pond at one time.

I've found my favorite way of dealing with them has been with a .204 or .17HMR, (the .204 works better for the longer range). They can be very hard to kill! Those big bodies turn quickly so you need a very fast bullet to get out there.

In Georgia, I have an exemption for killing them, since I am an agricultural producer, but check with your local game warden/extension agent for legality.

As far as trapping is concerned, I've lost two "victory" spring traps (leg hold traps) which I did not anchor down sufficiently. I can not get them to go into a "haveahart" type live trap, since they only seem to want to eat live fish. They are creatures of habit, so if you get leg traps, find their slides and put the traps just under water where they frequently move into your ponds. You'll see a lot of tracks and slides in this area. Anchor the chains down with bent rebar, or they will run away with them.

Also, try calling a local taxidermist and see is they know of any trappers. Depending on where you are located, you might have a lot of people who are willing to come out and set traps. Taxidermists will often times buy either the pelts or the whole animals for mounting.

Good luck with it. Alos, search yahoo answers for "otters" and you'll see some of the answers and solutions that others gave to me.

I didn't know this was legal. It would be cruel to keep a river otter as a pet unless you have a private river to keep it in. It's a wild animal and will want to get away from you. Please get a dog. Babby is spelled baby.

First, find out if it's legal in your area, state. A .222 with a scope would work.

You need to check that its legal for you to kill them in your state or you could end up with a jail sentence and/or a very large fine, there are pest control systems available.
This might help you with a way to get rid of them without actually killing them
