Guess I'm out on a limb, but I don't agree with the others. It was part of his job to hire someone and you were the most qualified, or were you hired because you "know" the main lawyer? Anyway, I don't think it's necessary to thank him.

Always send a thank you with a brief note on how you are excited to begin your new position and your hopes for how you are to do your job and fit in with the company. Nothing over the top. Just what you discussed in your interview that got you the job.

No don't send the thank-you e-mail. Thank you e-mails or notes make impact only when send immediately after the interview and NOT after been told they's hired someone else.

Absolutely. Even though you technically got the job due to your qualifications, you still need to do the polite thing and thank the lawyer for the opportunity to work at his firm.
