Every year around this holiday season, an interesting football match is organized in my country. A team of Imams, Roman Catholic priests, Orthodox Christian priests and Rabbis (those are the mainstream religions in my country) plays a game of football against its opponents - leading country politicians.

What do you think about that? Personally I find it brilliant! Religious leaders united together against corrupted politicians. Speaks volumes! I wish we had more of that ...

Well I am sure such a competition is quite intriguing, especially since the common perception of religious clergy is that they are too prudish to be involved in such exhibitions.

Now you make a distinction between politicians and religious clergy, by prefacing the word politician with the term “corrupt”. Though there are many areas in which there are stark differences between politicians and religious clergy, corruption is far from a distinctive mark that sets politicians apart from the clergy. If anything, based on my experiences, and from what I have read, corruption is one trait that they both hold in common.

Both politicians and religious clergy propound myths in order to win allegiance from the masses. The former invokes false images of patriotism and nationalistic fervor- ideals that they don’t demonstrate in their own lives. The latter entices the credulous with legends about a bygone era and an unrealistic all powerful parental figure that no rational person would grant credence.

Both politicians and religious clergy play on the fears of others. The government official exploits the xenophobia of their constituency, and panders to their feelings of economic and social disenfranchisement, while the religious authorities take advantage of the existential despair of their flock.

Really politicians and the clergy have too much in common to be on opposing teams. If anything they should be on the same team, and play against a common adversary such as scientists and philosophers – you know, rational people with integrity.

It's a great idea, but I would NOT want to be on the team opposing the imams. Whichever team the imams were on, I'd have to be on the same team because I'd be too afraid that one of them woud blow up on me if I crossed them wrong
