Flatulence, always a laugh a minute.

Before the date, have some specific questions in your head which can be used should an awkward silence come up. Use open questions, which will hopefully spark of a conversation rather than juts a simple yes or no answer.

If worse come to worst, my brother often starts a joke conversation about something really obscure, and will say in an obviously forced voice something really random like 'so, the Ebola virus', and hopes that the awkwardness vanishes and that his date finds the funny side!

Spell check sugar, it works well here (awkward)...and you say something before the silence gets awkward.

If there are too many silences between you, that may be a sign you aren't a good match...although some people get too nervous on a first date and so can't manage to relax and be themselves. Give 'em a 2nd chance but if it goes just as poorly, move on.

talk to them as if you know them a long time.
Go somewhere to eat casually. NO hosh posh restaurants at first. THose things suck. I drink wine, and try to pronounce the entrees right. Also the feeling is also unsaid about money.
Its like "wow you must make alot of money to take me here".
Not good conversation. Go to a cool classy but casual place where there is GOOD FOOD, music or people and atmosphere. Thai restaurants are a great first date in my experience. And so is Italian food. Conversation starts with good food. Enjoy the secrets I shared.

Be yourself. You would be surprised how many people are wrong about the people they date. At first we don't know what the person is really like. But when you are open you actually open up the other person to express themself and have a really good time! I have never really had that problem, but have heard others who have. And being open actually allows both of you to know quicker if you want to continue to see each other that way or just be friends.

P.S.: You don't have to always pay attention to your spelling. We are all different and that is what makes us unique and special. YOU ARE BEING YOU!

Get comfortable with silences, my dear. Just relax and smile at him/her. That alone usually makes the other person relax a bit, too, and will probably prompt them to continue the conversation.

ok. well in my years on this earth i have had many many awkward silences. i say that if and when there is one you should try to make funny noises. its always nice to have a good laugh. my personal favorite funny noise is the under-armpit farty sound. i do that whenever i get the chance. its a great ice breaker too. like, when you first arrive you should just pull out the noises. and yes, i am being serious, it really works. try it.
you know you want to.
its fun.
come on.
do it.
now.

Just say something to start a conversation, like "So what did you do all weekend?" or "do you like {whatever the hell you're doing, insert here} this?" "are you having fun" something that will make her answer the question but furthermore start a conversation

Start a new conversation. If you guys share something in common, such as a class, talk about that. Talk about how much you dislike the teacher, or how much you like your date's shirt. Think of something around you and talk about that.

I have a friend who always randomly yells "PCHUNGK" (it's hard to spell) whenever there's an awkward silence, it's HILARIOUS. But no one else can do it properly, so I wouldn't reccomend it.
