I mean I wanted to buy a 60, but they're discontinued and the 80gb don't arrive in the UK til March 2008 so if I bought a 40 would I be able to get more memory added to it somehow? Also can it be reconfigured so it supports ps2 games?

hey russ, congrats on when your going to buy ure ps3 lol, anyways i got mine 2 weeks ago now and love it, i got the 40gb too, first thing of all 40gb is more than enough, listen i have 2,000 songs and 30 movies and i still have 15gb left. but thats cos i put all my songs collection and high quality movies into my ps3, and yes i will update to a sata 2.5 inch hard drive with 5400rpm, but not yet because the 15gb i have left will last me for ages guaranteed because all my songs are already there and i do not download trailers or videos from the network,

anyways 40gb will last you for ages, and yes you can upgrade hard drive its easy as long as you have a 2.5" sata 5400rpm hard drive, you can have 7200rpm, but best to stay on the safe side eh... anyways wish you a happy new year with your new ps3.

Yes you can put a new hard drive on it up to 250 gigs or over 500 if you get a external hard drive and of you want to play ps2 games on your ps3 I suggest that you wait for the 80 gb of buy a ps2 or try to find a new or used 60gb

It seems like the 40 gig won't support the software emulation. It's probably down to firmware on the new PS3's not having the emulator profiles for the PS2 and PSX, so its pretty unlikely that you'll ever be able to run those games on a 40gig PS3.

Yes, you can use any 2.5" SATA HDD with the PS3.

Though the 40GB PS3 can NOT play PS2 games, while the 60GB and 80GB PS3's can.

I saw an ad a week or so ago (from PC world, i think) saying they had the 60GB back in stock, so they might still be around.
But, swapping out the HD later on is fairly straightforward (the PS3 manual even tells you how), but, as said before, wont change anything as regards b/wards compat.

There are no plans to release the 80GB model of the PS3 in PAL regions (UK). Just to let you know.

You can upgrade any PS3 harddrive with any 2.5" SATA HDD.
