I don't live in either NJ or PA. I'm waaaay over on the other side of the States. I live in AZ. No matter where you live you will find grocery carts scattered through out the parking lots. I think it is a shame people are too lazy to return the carts to their station. Especially when they have a place to put the carts at each end of the parking rows, usually located near or by the handicap parking. I get so furious when parking is limited and you finally see a spot, only to find a shopping cart there! I have blocked traffic to get out and move the cart in order to park my car. And, I take my cart back just to help out the staff at the store. I feel so sorry for the carry out personnel that has to search and round up the carts. Some people are so self centered they could care less how inconvenient it is for others as long as they are not inconvenienced. This really pushes my button. I could go on and on. But I'll be nice and step down from my soap box.

Yes, I always return the carts. And I think people who do not, are lazy, period. It doesn't matter where you live.....it happens all over. Where I live it gets super-windy. And more than once, I have run after flying shopping carts that would have definitely hit a car. I just don't understand it. How someone can take the shopping cart all the way to their car, yet not walk 15 feet to put them in a safe place, is beyond me.

Personally, I would like to return my cart every time because I'm irritated by others' carts, but when I have my kids with me and the cart return is not near the only spot I could find, I leave it. I'm not going to leave my kids alone in the car to return a cart. I think there needs to be more cart return stations so I don't have to be irritating. I live in CA, by the way.

WOW!!!! Then I guess that PROVES that I DO come from NJ, since I return the carts to their "stations" or those "cart" spaces. As for Pennsy, I can't speak for them but I have seen "cart violations" everywhere. I don't think where one lives has anything to do with where one lives or grew up... but in thoughtlessness and carelessness.
Have a polite day.

Yes I do. I had my car rammed by a shopping cart. It was a windy day & it came across the entire parking lot & hit my car.
I saw it coming, but was too far away to intercede. I have had people push their empty cart up against my car & leave it. I think it's a very lazy person that can't put the cart in the proper
place. There have been times when I find one empty parking
spot & there is an empty cart in it.

Always! If there is a designated station you should.
We are responsible for this. If a cart is left sitting in an area that can cause a ding on someones car, because we were too lazy to put it back, can sue us for damages. It is a law. Even if the wind blew it (your cart) and hit someone else/ or car. A judge would rule in favor for the victim.
It's not just polite to return the shopping car. It can end up in small claims court.

I live in Michigan, and I return my cart to the returner. I hate it when others dont, so I make it point to do it. I hate when Im trying to park into a spot and Im halfway in when I see a cart in the way and I have to get out of my car and move it and then park again or find another spot!!!
At grocery stores, I see it done alot, but at stores like Target, I dont see it as much.

There are people who are paid to round up the carts. If people keep returning their own carts, then the blood of those workers is on their hands--innocent people just trying to make a buck by rounding up shopping carts will be out of jobs. My hands are clean--I can sleep at night. Can YOU?
Their blood is on your hands...

I am not sure about the demographics of cart return. I can only speak for myself. I always return my cart. I do it cause it's a pet peeve of mine and I would hate for it to roll into a innocent persons car. I also hate when they are left blocking a parking stall. Lastly , I am always looking for a little exercise, so I like having to walk to put the cart away!
As for my feelings about people that dont return their cart to the corral....I think their lazy BUT sometimes it's a mom with kids ..In that case I would rather she leave the cart and watch her kids

Its so nice to read that most people do return them to their proper place. I do all the time or pick up one outside before entering to do my shopping.
I would say this is a 50/50 thing if people do it or not; BUT I would be willing to put my money down on those who live in colder climates are more likely to return them to store or stalls rather than those who live in warmer climates...as they don't have the sympathy for those whose jobs it is to go out and collect them all back to the store for THEIR shopping convenience.
