Unless they're a relative of yours (and I think a close one, so no "5th cousin three times removed" or anything like that), you probably won't be able to verify it.
Generally speaking though, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Lots of times people will make up stories or blow them out of proportion to make it seem much more interesting, which tends to interest people more in the story in the first place.
Of course that's not always true, but most of the time it is.

You can't get access to another person records as they are classified. Only people with the person permission has access

Sorry you do not have the need to know. Ask the person if you can see their dd214. If what they told you is classified, you will just need to take their word on it.

You can't. Even if the person is deceased only a surviving next-of-kin can get access to it.

you don't. under the Freedom of Information act you must have a legitimate need to access their records. not to mention be a spouse or child.

I don't believe they are open to the public. If you know this person ask to see their DD214.
