You need to ask them. Personally, it depends on the situation. If you are going shopping at the mall or to a causal restaurant (like Chili's), I don't see why the kiddos would be a problem.

But, do you bring them to the movies? Or to their house? Those could be problems Especially their house. Even if you watch your kids well, some people might not like the little ones all over.

Some people who don't have kids, have really nice and really non-friendly kid homes. This means, expensive art work or nice furniture. Also, nicely polished hardwood floors. Some people don't even like you touching the walls, b/c you'll get fingerprints on the paint.

You need to say, "I don't have sitter, is this going to be an activity where the kids are going to be a distraction?"

Don't say, "Can I bring the kids?" Most people will say "Yes", b/c "No" seems rude.

Also, don't listen to the person above. It's incredible rude to assume people are inviting your whole family. Just b/c your mom or a dad, it doesn't mean you should bring the kids everywhere. If you don't have a sitter, you decline. But, it's rude to assume people will tolerate your children everywhere you go.

It's rude and presumptuous.

depends on the function. we don't go out much but when we do i always say, we'll be bringing...., so that they know head of time. it's not that i feel i have to make excuses, i just like to let folks know in case something else is going on.

Hey, you're a family. They know this. If they don't want the kids they can offer to provide babysitting for you at their home.
