My mom gave me a couch and to find out her cat has peed in the corners of the couch and it is very foul. I want to know what will not only take away the smell but prevent the smell from coming back.
I know cats urine are amonia based so cant use most household products that have amonia.
What will kill that proteine in cats urine and break down those crystals. I DONT WANT THE SMELL TO COME BACK.
Does natures miracle or urine off work permanently so I wont have to spend money reapllying.
Should I just buy a new couch? :-(

The problem with using 'home made' cleaners is that they lack one fundamental part of what some store-bought cleaners are made of, and that's an enzymatic cleaning agent. Urine, feces and other body fluids are comprised of organic matter, and the only thing that breaks down organic matter are enzymatic cleaners specifically marketed for body fluids. Spices and citrus are sometimes effective deterrents because of their offensive smell, but they simply mask the traces of organic matter instead of breaking them down. I haven't ever had a cat urination problem in my house, but one of my dogs had a hard time with housebreaking. I have a very sensitive nose, and tried numerous products to effectively remove the distinct smell, but the one that worked best is called Nature's Miracle. The true testament to the effectiveness of the product, though, was that our cats no longer hesitated and hovered over the portions of the carpet the dog squatted over. The Feliway should help if your cat is indeed urine marking because of the outdoor cat, but you're right in trying to deter the offending stray to really get to the root of the problem. I'm not sure if you're in a snowy climate, but if you're not, you should be able to put moth balls around the areas the outside cat frequents. The smell of the moth balls is a great way to keep unwanted pets out of the yard (just make sure your pets and/or children don't ingest them). Motion-detecting sprinklers are also an effective method of keeping bad kitties out of the yard, and also bothersome neighborhood children :) As an aside, it's most likely that your cat is spraying around door(s) and/or window(s) if he's spurred on by the presence of another feline. When you pick up your cleaning product, use it around the interior and exterior of those openings, in case the outdoor cat is spraying outside in response to your cat's spraying inside. Good luck with your kitty - I know this is a very frustrating problem. Please feel free to email me if I can help you out any other way!

I purchased a house that had cat urine smell in the living room (wood) floor. I took up the carpet and sprayed it heavily with Simple Solution. It's an enzyme based odor/stain remover that you can find at the larger pet stores. Test it on a part of the sofa that won't show first, then douse the areas with the solution. I've heard Nature's Miracle is good too, but I've always had good experiences with Simple Solution for any stains or odors.

Nature's Miracle has never worked to my satisfaction.

I had a sofa that went into storage and something peed on it during that time. I used Urine-off, which I used for housebreaking two puppies and a cat with kidney failure (very bad ammonia pee with her as her health failed) and it worked and saved the sofa. I would have thrown it out if it hadn't worked.

It's worth a try. If the pee has soaked deep into the batting, even this might not work. But trying it is cheaper than a new couch and if it works, great.

Urine-off is available at vets and online. Go to www.urine-off.com

You can try sponging on soap and water, just regular bar hand soap that you lather up on a washcloth -- if you don't have anything like Dogtergent or a urine remover in the house. Pat it dry, use a hair dryer to help it dry out more.

Don't use vinegar unless you know it won't take the dye out of the furniture. I've had good luck with just the soap and water though.

Lemon juice is a natural odar killer. It's safe to use around pets and furniture. Just use plaine lemon juice for dark fabrics, and for light colored or white fabric, mix with an equal amount of water. It should take the smell right out!
