I agree with you, either our taste buds have gone to heck, or HV has changed their recipe, because it's NOT the same flavor/taste/texture that it used to be........My suggestion?? Try the HV from the packs that use buttermilk in the recipe.....adjust your mayo and buttermilk from there.....It took me about 3 tries, but I finally got it to where I like it.....

Outback Ranch Dressing
1 1/2 Cups 30 min
Change to: Cups US Metric
1 tablespoon hidden valley ranch dressing mix
1 cup mayonnaise (the real stuff)
1/2 cup milk
1/4 teaspoon coarse black pepper
1/8 teaspoon paprika
1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
Mix all of the ingredients in a medium bowl.
Chill at least 1/2 hour before serving which is the key step to maximize flavor.
EDIT 4/15/2007: If you prefer a spicy, kicked up version of Outback Ranch Dressing, substitute cayenne pepper for the paprika - your spicy preferring taste buds will thank you.

I totally agree with you about the taste - I just won't buy any store bought dressings anymore. I am a big believer of buttermilk in ranch dressing, but it also has to have fresh garlic so it doesn't have that "processed" taste. This is the recipe that I use and I really love it...everything in it is fresh, and it really tastes that way!
2 cloves garlic
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1 cup prepared or homemade mayonnaise
1/4 to 1/3 cup buttermilk
2 tablespoons minced flat-leaf parsley leaves
2 tablespoons minced fresh chives
1 scallion, trimmed and thinly sliced
1 teaspoon white wine vinegar
Freshly ground black pepper
Mash the garlic and salt to a paste with the side of a chef's knife. In a medium bowl, whisk together the garlic, mayonnaise, 1/4 cup buttermilk, parsley, chives, scallion, vinegar and pepper to taste. If the sauce is very thick, thin the dressing with a couple tablespoons more of the buttermilk. Use immediately or store covered, in the refrigerator, for up to 3 days.
Happy New Year!

**********RANCH SALAD DRESSING
1 c. mayonnaise
1 c. buttermilk/regular milk
1 tsp. parsley flakes
1 tsp. garlic salt
1/4 tsp. Accent
1/8 tsp. pepper
Mix together and serve. Note: tastes like Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing. Dry onion flakes may be added if desired. I prefer the dressing without onions.

Make your own by using the seasoning packets available in the store. That way you can make it to your own taste.
