Why do women in Muslim countries let men dictate what they should wear and punish them if they do not conform?

It's a matter of not having enough power to safely object, going against the expectations of the community, etc.
But being dictated to regarding dress is not the worst oppression. Even worse is being denied an education, a career, and the freedom to make basic human choices about one's own life.

For the same reason women in Christian countries used to let men dictate what they should wear and punish them if they did not conform. The freedoms women now have in Christian nations are relatively recent things.

Historically, men have generally held the power and control over women in all countries and religions. It's not a Muslim thing, it's a human thing.

Well the women who do speak out against it usually end up murdered in a very public way as a warning to other women. It's kind of like, why are slaves slaves. Why don,t they revolt or run away. Some do, most of the ones who try are killed horribly as examples. Unless every woman in say Afghanistan stood up took up arms and killed almost all of the men they will continue to be treated any way the men want to treat them. One particular thing that is actually going on in Afghanistan today is women burning themselves in protest of the way that their husbands or fathers treat them. Think how bad it must be to willingly burn yourself alive rather than stay with your husband. Not all of the women die, some survive and are sent back to their husbands or fathers. The women usually do this in a very public place so that all will know. Desperate and brave or simply to brutalized by their menfolk they no longer want to live and they want some sort of revenge on the men even if it is just the neighbors knowing that his wife despised him.

Your totally correct...unfortunately, Muslim countries are rife with corruption and more than often speaking out against political figures, can be even considered as treason, which can result in imprisonment, torture and even execution. In addition, some Muslims belong to cultures which limits females activities, for example I am a Muslim female (British) and know some (adult) females Muslims that are not allowed to go out shopping alone without their parents/brothers, some are not even allowed to use their home telephones, many are not allowed to wear Western clothing e.g. trousers. In Saudia Arabia it is illegal for a female to drive, and trust me this is not from Gods teachings..as Women in the Prophets times rode horse, camels and donkeys. It is complicated, also because many Muslim countries are Third World, so most are concentrating on where there next meal will come from. I think that people should be allowed to wear whatever they wish.
