and if so how many more laps can a car run with nitrogen filled tires on a 1 mile track as opposed to tires filled with air?

PERIOD! Nitrogen is a larger molecule, therefore less escapes . Meaning you will be riding less on under inflated tires which consumes more fuel.

under inflated=poor gas milage
properly inflated=normal or good gas milage

Edit: forgot my link, can ya take away the thumbs down now?

Accornding to several studies I've seen it makes no difference. You still are suppose to keep checking your pressure regularly. Regular air you breath is something like 60 or more percent nitrogen as it is. The nitrogen people, and the tire shops would like you to think there is some value though - go figure.

For starters Nitrogen doesn't explode
and the reason we run it isn't because it makes the tires lighter it doesn't
Nitrogen doesn't expand or contract with temperature like regular air does, also no moisture content
we also use nitrogen in out impact wrenches because of the 3000+ PSI in the bottles

Nitrogen does not give better fuel mileage than air in the tires.

Compressed air contains water vapor but compressed nitrogen does not. That is the reason nitrogen is used in race tires. Dry nitrogen has a consistant pressure rise with temperature rise. Compressed air with varying amounts of water vapor does not have a consistant and predictable pressure rise with temperature rise.

No, the whole idea behind nitrogen in the tires is that nitrogen does not react as much to temperature as oxygen. Not near as much swelling and shrinking in the weather. This makes it great for street tires, especially in the winter, as the cold will not deflate your tires the way they do with just compressed air. In Nascar this would be and advantage because the tire pressures wouldn't change as much as the tire temps went up.

It would be almost nearly the same. The only difference is if the gas is lighter than air, than there will be less weight on the tires reducing the friction contact with the ground, but compared to the weight of the car and all it wouldn't make a difference...Got Tony Stewart!

no, nitrogen filled tires exhibit a more stable pressure profile with varying temperature than air filled tires

Since the nitrogen is more stable than compressed air under temperature change, it stands to reason if the tire pressure stays more consistent, it will ultimately result in improved tire performance and thus, better fuel mileage.

My answer is yes, nitrogen is better.

nitrogen will not expand or contract with heat or cold your tires will remain at same pressure all the time air when heated expandes witch will increase the circumferance whitch will make your engine work harder to turn the tire and use more fuel your local auto tire dealer will fill for about $30 u.s. dollars and they wont blow up

No, but they don't loose pressure like air filled tires over time.

I think some of you are mistaking Nitrogen for Hydrogen.
