Lhasa Apso: country of origin is Tibet, they were bred to warn of intruders at temples and monasteries, they came to the US in 1933 as a gift from the Dalai Lama. It's muzzle is medium length about one third the length of it's head, their coat is heavy long and straight. The hair is kept parted down the middle from the nose to the tail. It is usually about 10-11 inches high and weighs about 14 or 15 pounds. It is an affectonate dog but can be wary of strangers and can become uncomfortable with children. It has a low activiy level so it does well in apartments.
Shih Tzu: country of origin is China. They were bred to resemble the foo dog which is sacred to Buddhists. It was ONLY kept by royalty, but during the boxer rebelion most were killed to keep them from the westerners or americans. It has a short and square unwrinkled muzzle with a broad jaw. Their coat is dense long and flowing, it is double coated, and the hair is usually kept in a topknot, a fancy ponytail. It is about 8 to 11 inches high and weighs about 9 to 16 pounds. It is friendly trusting and gets along with everyone including children strangers and other animals. It's activity level is low so it does well in apartments as well.
They are quite simiular, some of the miner differences are the coat the muzzle the height the weight the hair styles. One of the main differences are their temperment, because the Lhasa was bred to alert people of intruders and the Shih Tzu was bred solely as a compainion dog that is why Lhasa's are a little more wary of strangers. I hope this helped.

Yes, I have both! The Lhasa Apso is taller and longer. The shih tzu is a smaller dog all over. The shih tzu's eyes bulge out, the Lhasa Apso's don't. They are both related, as you can see by the tail curled over their backs and their long coats, however, the Lhasa has an undercoat (double coat) and the Shih tzu doesn't. The Lhasa Apso is a more protective watchdog and more loyal. He is my preference for the best pal you can have!

"The land of Tibet was the home of the Lhasa Apso - the breed taking its name from the sacred city of Lhasa."
"In the seventeenth century, dogs were brought from Tibet and bred in the forbidden City of Peking, probably by crossing the Tibetan Lhasa Apso and the native Pekingese."

they are completely different dogs. A shih tzu weighs somewhere around 5 pounds whereas a lhasa wieghs somewhere around 15 at full growth. a lhasa has more of a snout where the other has a pugged face. completely different, even their markings are different

there 2 completly different breeds, originated in differetn places (though for the same reasons, both were bred as temple alarm systems)
they look different from eachother, different coat color, differetn structure, and slightly different personalities.
both are fun breeds however and both tend to be good with kids and low shedding making them a good choice for people with MILD allergies as many people with allergies are not bothered by the low shedding, low dander coat of the breed.
