Some LDS will drink cola and others won't. It stems from the "Words of Wisdom" which recommend no coffee, tea, or tobacco. They are dietary guidelines for healthy living, not commandments. These recommendations also include minimizing intake of red meat.
Some LDS will drink beverages that contain caffeine, and some will not. It's optional.
The intent of the Words of Wisdom came from preventing addictions, in general.

It isn't Coca-cola but caffeine that some LDS members stay away from. We believe in following what is called the Word of Wisdom. It warns against drinking certain types of drinks and sets out other basic guidelines. Some interpret the wording to mean no caffeinated drinks whatsoever should be consumed. Others believe it is only talking about drinks high in caffeine such as coffee. Those who follow it most strictly don't drink caffeinated Coke, which is what I am assuming you are referring to.
Then there are simply those people LDS, Catholic, Evangelical, atheist or anywhere between who realize that carbonation is unhealthy (and care enough not to drink it), so they don't drink sodas at all.

Mormons do not use illegal drugs and cigarettes, or drink coffee and black tea. The Bible contains many dietary restrictions that God revealed through Biblical prophets. The Mormon health code was also revealed from God through a prophet named Joseph Smith. If you'd like to read the revelation Joseph received, you can find a copy at http://scriptures.lds.org/en/dc/89 .
As I mentioned, Mormons do not drink coffee or black tea. Though God has not explained the reason, many Mormons believe it is because of caffeine, which has detrimental health effects. Mormons do drink hot chocolate, and some Mormons also drink caffeinated soda (although some choose not to).

Some people say that the Word of Wisdom says that we should avoid all products with caffeine. In actual fact, the Word of wisdom does not forbid caffeine, it tells us to avoid "hot drinks". This was interpreted by our General Authorities to mean coffee and tea.
Each person has the freedom to expand the Word of Wisdom however they see fit, and if they wish to avoid soft drinks, that is up to them. I have known people who will not eat chocolate, because it also contains caffeine.
I practice moderation, and enjoy my soft drinks and chocolate, but don't overdo it.
Lucid Freedom, the LDS Church does NOT own Coca Cola, or any other soft drink company.
Personally, I prefer Pepsi, but since it's twice the cost of the store brand, I drink the store brand.

Coke has caffeine in it, and caffeine is a stimulant, which the Mormons claim makes it a drug, which makes it a big no-no.
They do not drink coffee for the same reason.
Its a rather well-known Mormon belief.
I dont drink coffee, or tea, I dont smoke, and I have stopped drinking coke. But I am NOT religious.

Mormons can drink cola products if they want to. Some don't because of the caffeine, but it is not against Church teachings.

Coca-cola is the mark of the beast. Don't you ever read Revelation?
I think the Baptists have put out a gorgeous brochure all about the mark of the beast, plus the anti-Christ. A lot of it they get from Revelation 12. Read it and weep.
Unless you're an atheist like me.

Mormons go by "The Word of Wisdom" that doesn't specfically say: no soda, but it says "NO COFFEE or Tea"
so some really strict people who are mormons/LDS decide for themselves that they don't want to drink Cokes, etc..
It is their personal choice.
But there are plenty of LDS/mormons who drink soda's they just try not to get addicted.
:-))
