shelters will usually keep the animals for 5-10 days and then after that they will usually put them on the adoption line.....if the shelter is no kill shelter then the animal will stay there till it gets adopted....the kill shelter usually have x number of weeks or months befoere sadly they put the animal down. I don't know all that goes into it for kill shelters because I have only worked at a no kill shelter where we will only put animals down that are too sick or are suffering greatly. or are extremly aggressive. though we do our best to work with the aggressive animals and try and turn them around and have been very successful in a lot of cases...sadly there are some that are too aggressive and we can't get them to turn around.

It depends on what your city does with stray animals.

In Milwaukee, since the Humane Society went to 'no kill' they no longer accept any pet. ALL animals (strays, pets turned in by their owners, ferals, etc.) are given to Animal Control first. If it's a lost animal or picked up stray they hold it 7 days. Then they call the Humane Society who, IF they have open cages, come over and evaluate the animals that are on hold at the Animal Control. They/'ll look at each animal for three different days and if they want any they'll take them. If they don't take them, then Animal Control calls the other two shelters--who do the same thing (evaluate, decide, take or leave). Then they call breed rescues.

If none of them wants the animal, then Animal Control euthenizes the ones that are left.

However if an animal is brought in injured, sick or is too wild to handle, they automatically put them down right away.

So while our Humane Society sounds all nice and good about being a 'no kill' shelter, they foist the killing off onto the city run Animal Control agency who has to do all the euthenizing.

You can find out what your city does by calling your major shelter or animal control and asking.

Depends on where you live they get three days here to get adopted if not then they are put down, try calling instead a HUMANE SOCIETY instead. Animal control is just that Animal control. Humane societies have a different outlook and have volunteers and are usually a no-kill entity.
Try the phone book or call a local vet for information on these agencies. Don't take it outside a store to try and have it adopted strange people with deranged ideas will take a pet and do unmentionables... try the link below and see if there is a shelter or society in your area listed. Hope this helps.

it all depends on the city. here in Oklahoma they hold them for 3 days before euthanizing. thats why if someone loses a cat they need to check shelters in 10 mile radius immediately or else... in most every towns there are many animal rescue groups, do some research on petfinder, look up your zip code and do a shelter search for your area. call the shelters and ask them if they can rescue the kitty or at least point you in the right direction for some help.

If they are short on space they will most likely, I would try giving it away in front of a store or asking friends if they would like to keep it.

i am pretty sure they will give it to a shelter, unless it has rabies, a big disease, or has a biting problem. if it is normal, i dont think they will kill it!
