The Japanese celebrate New Years as a major Shinto holiday. Traditionally, the Japanese go to a Shinto shrine on New Year's day to pray, be blessed, and draw their luck for the year. Originally, this was held on Chinese New Year's day, which is based on a lunar calendar, but the Japanese have adopted the western calendar and the New Year's celebration is now held on January 1.

Jews celebrate Rosh HaShanna (literally 'head of the year') sometime around September (it changes on the Western calender). Rituals include eating apples with honey to symbolise the hope for a sweet new year.
