The Japanese celebrate New Years as a major Shinto holiday. Traditionally, the Japanese go to a Shinto shrine on New Year's day to pray, be blessed, and draw their luck for the year. Originally, this was held on Chinese New Year's day, which is based on a lunar calendar, but the Japanese have adopted the western calendar and the New Year's celebration is now held on January 1.
