Because it would shared by a single people,of one culture, religion and ethnicity, divided against their will by conquerors. They were not contesting for exclusive possession. In Jerusalem it is extremely clear that sooner or later the idea is to destroy the mosque on the temple mount to build a third temple. In addition the Palestinians resident in jerusalem have been violently ghettoized. I support reviving the original 1947 U.N. plan to establish Jerusalem as an international zone under direct U.N. administration. The present possessors have been highly derelict in preserving christian shrines in the city, many of which survived 1300 years of Muslim oversight without damage.

Simply because the Isralies, Palestinians and several other groups have long standing histroical claims on the city. There are places that are sacred to the three major religions in the area (Judiasm, Islam and Christianity) located in various parts of the city. There are sites (like the wailing wall) that are frequented by Christians, Jews and Muslims alike (and oddly enough there haven't had any problems there, go figure) would that be like some sort of "neutral zone", or should it be in one particular part tha has been partitioned off? What needs to happen is someone, someone that has more than the single working brain cell that possessed by whoever is working the problem now, needs to find a way to get the two groups to co-exist peacefully. Remember the "shared" Berlin was separated by a very large wall, armed guards and land mines for several decades befreo it came down back in the 90's. Would it even be possible to do someting like that in Jerusalem? I think not. There are too many things associated with to much to make that feasable. The city is still such a site for pilgrimages that partitioning it off that way would make far more problems than it would solve. Better to find an equitable solution for the parties involved than to start carving up such an ancient and important place.

I don't remember which one, but some prominent Leftist Israeli polititian was on European tour promoting the idea of splitting Jerusalem and sharing it. That was few years ago. He came to Berlin and delivered his speach. Germans were very polite to him, but as careful as they were they told him that promoting splitting Jerusalem with a wall in Berlin was a wrong idea in a wrong place. So Germans and Beliners did not support it. The speach was a failier and embarrasment there. Germans destroyed Berlin wall as soon as they could - and they were the same nation on both sides. So your argument is really counter-productive.

Would you really want to build a wall dividing Jerusalem like Berlin?

There are already plenty of complaints about the security barrier in the West Bank, you want to compound it?

Taking the holy sites aside such a plan would be a disaster. That is why every plan that talks about having East Jerusalem as the capital of a Palestinian state explicitly states it should be an open city. Could you not have picked Sarajevo as a better example?

Of all things you want Jerusalem to have a wall like Berlin?

If it is up to the wish of Israelis, sharing Jerusalem never going to happen, for the Israelis, sharing Jerusalem gives the impression to the world that Jerusalem is not much important in Judaism, then the whole theory of “promised land” will be questioned.

Before,,,,, Gaza was the holiest place on earth for them, but after Hamas done a good job there, it become not much holy and they escape…

Same will happen in Jerusalem if the Palestinian resistant concentrate there…

H, I guess it is time to block the two little toddlers here. Ultra and Diana.

I am an Israeli, and I have no problem sharing!
Those who do have a problem with it point to the fact that before 1967 Jews and Xians were not allowed to visit their holy places, and the Wailing Wall was turned into a trash dump by the Waqf....

Look at Berlin now. is it still shared? That lasted for 50 years and then the separation disappeared. What kind of faith should anyone have that the existence of two sides is a sure thing for the future if berlin stopped being split so soon?

The Germans didn't deal well with that reality - but there is a difference - all Germans were really all the same people while in Jerusalem you have a conflict with two different peoples as it is said. Regardless I think there is a need to divid Jerusalem and I asked a question on a similar vein previously - see: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AhMLvg.wEjbMb2phwy7PKeLty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20071227084347AAckOW8
