maraners go for 650...so what do you think a new colour line should go for?

2007-12-30 06:56:24 · 10 answers · asked by jayne beal 3 in Pets Dogs

my god i have never seen such snobbery in my life. new lines are created all the time...do you think great danes were born in a variety of colours????? the whole point of out breeding her mother was to create a new line to be bred back in. all pedigrees are genetically enhanced by out breeding at some stage or they wouldn't exist. she has already been accepted as a chocolate weimaraner and i was told that it is a GOOD idea to breed her to add not only to the colour pool in the breed but also to make the genetic pool wider for health reasons. and she is not bred with breeds listed.......christ...i bet yours has a docked tail too..........don't happen to have a declawed cat by any chance???? ahem..all breeders make money from selling puppies ms 1200 dollars or you wouldn't have bought yours! i will not get her spayed because she doesn't fit with some peoples idea of what a TRUE weimaraner should look like. she is a gorgeous animal who just happens to be brown.

we also have a silver in the family and there are inherently genetically unstable hence the reason they don't live as long as other breeds...so...if you love the breed you should want to prolong it's lifespan!!

i would love to post a piccie of her, have never done it but will try. as for the genetic snobbery....it generally takes a while for different colours to be accepted. have a silver too actually.

Chocolate weimaraners are disqualified from the AKC. It is NOT a new line and has been though to be a mix with the German SHorthaird Pointer.

There are quite a few chocolate weims, they should not be sold as "rare" they should either establish a seperate breed with an extensive program and purpose (such as white GSD) or they need to be spay and neutered.

A weimaraner from a reputable breeder goes for more, mine was $1200 from his champion pedigree. Please spay and neuter your PETS.

You deserve every negative answer you got - you know very well that chocolate is neither rare nor accepted for weimaraners, it is a genetic fluke, an aberation - you sure don't breed it, it is NOT desirable.

Heaven only knows what other genetic mutations go with this ridiculous color - just neuter and spay and don't try to sound as if you are doing something good for the breed when you are obviously just trying to make some money on "rare" color - it isn't rare, it's complete undesirable.

I had a "rare" white german shepherd that lived for nearly 18 years, she was beautiful and relatively healthy except for the usual eye problem (wandering eye, went blind eventually), but I had her spayed and would never breed her - she may have been gorgeous, but white shepherds are not showable and they have too many recessive genetics problems. Now I do rescue and see all the "rare" and "exotic" dachshunds that are bred by people with your attitude - dapples, double dapples, so exotic with that one blue eye, even two blue eyes. Trouble is, that eye is completely wrong and most of these blue eyed dapples will be blind, if they aren't born that way. I've seen them born with no eyes - pathetic - and how many get put down out of the litter before a few are even in shape to sell.
There's a reason for breed standards - and it isn't about money, it's about the good of the breed.

You obviously have no clue what you are doing and just in it for the money.

"One of only 2 chocolate weimeraners in the country" - you are ignorent as well as greedy, chocolates are not at all uncommon, there are plenty born, thought is that it started as a cross contamination with a German pointer. Nobody breeds this on purpose = nothing rare about it.

Have you tried talking to the dog ring judges? I think their input would be really good, they're the ones after all who would be looking at the optional class colors. And a dialog with various weimaraners across the country (via email) would help with you setting a price.

You'd have to fix the blood lines (not neuter! I'm talking about watching for genetic defects) and look to long term on it if you're really serious about raising them.

They won't be called the 'gray ghosts' though,

You do not have one of only two chocolate Weims in the country…there are more than two, but that does not make them desirable just because the are rare…technically, they are defective.

WHO told you it was a good idea to add a fault to the color pool? No one worth listening to, I guarantee. Breeding dogs with color faults will NOT enhance health, and in many breeds, will make health poor (deafness, blindness, etc.). It seems to me the person who bred your “unusual” colored dog was hoping to sell her litter to people who didn’t understand the breed. Chocolate Weims need to be spayed, not bred.

If you are interested in breeding dogs, join a breed club, and hook up with a RESPONSIBLE breeder or two, and learn something about which dogs should be bred, and why. You’ll come out much farther ahead (even financially) by breeding sound dogs that can do their job, are healthy, and fit the breed standard…here’s a link to their standard:

and one for their national breed club (there are likely clubs close to you, as well):

Wow, you sound like a good breeder. Where on earth you think that reputable breeders make money by breeding? Maybe you only hear from backyard breeders or puppy millers that breeding makes tons of money. According to AKC, coat and color should be:
"Short, smooth and sleek, solid color, in shades of mouse-gray to silver-gray, usually blending to lighter shades on the head and ears." So your chocolate color is not acceptable. Accordingly, you don't sound a breeder who is passionate about the breed. You sound like "breeder" to make money. If you are breeding Chocolate Weimaraner, you cannot sell them to show homes, so it means that they are pet quality puppies. Also, I think $650 is the price for backyard breeder puppies. Maybe your Chocolate ones probably can be sold for $100 since it's not AKC recognized?

Sounds pretty. I have a weimaraner that was accidentally crossed with a border collie so she looks just like a weim but black with shorter ears. Can you e-mail me a pic? My e-mail is milliegrifffizz@yahoo.co.uk

You should not breed her. Wiems are supossed to be mouse-grey to silver-grey.

A "chocolate" is not an acceptable color. When you breed for color, you throw health and temperment out the window.. some colors may bring out health issues.

Get her spayed, quit trying to make money off your dog.

I don't like chocolate dogs, they melt and get your hands chocolaty when you pet them.
