The French actually call it the sleeve.
English Channel because the Royal Navy dominated it for over a century.

The North sea was known as the German Sea until after the first World War

The English call it the English channel because we used to own both sides of it. We had to give back Calais. The French call it "the sleeve".

Because the English aren't about to yield the last bastion of occupation of France after the loss of Calais, and the French aren't about to acknowledge English domination.

Since when do we have to follow what the French do?

If it wasn't for Britian, France would have been part of the German Empire in 1914 or, still, part of the Thousand Year Nazi Reich. The French are certainly not a nation to be held in high esteem by anyone.
