It is cats' nature to be able to find their homes, so you don't have to worry about her getting lost.
However, there are cats that have been run over by cars, so I would reconsider about that..

I've heard of doing that so they DON'T try to find their way home like if you've just moved so that the cat doesn't try to go to the other house.
I don't know if it works though.
Your cat will find it's way home. Just let her out and she will be scared and only stay close to the house at first and gradually explore more.
But she might enjoy it if you put butter on her paws because cat's love to eat butter.

Does it make any sense that butter would do this? No!
Old wives tales come from somewhere (and this one is a doozie). They thought if a cat gave themselves a bath then they'd be apt to stay where they bathed, but that isn't true. Sticking butter on their leg only makes their fur sticky and can get on the furniture. It does nothing to 'keep them home'.
Keep your cat inside. There's far too many life killing dangers outside for a cat to stay safe from.

I would strongly advise not letting your cat roam outdoors. In addition to cars, there is the chance of your cat getting poisoned by licking antifreeze, for example. Also, your cat could contract a disease from an outdoor animal.

i've never heard of putting butter on their paws...odd. wouldn't she just lick it off right away? besides that, cats and other domestic animals always know where 'home' is. my dog used to dissappear for days over to the neighbors house (we live in the country) but she'd always come back.

First of all you dont put butter on your cat unless you decide that you are gonna cook it :P Second you shouldnt even let your cat outside. Yes they are natural hunters and scavangers but cats and dogs alike deserve to be kept inside with their masters and loved till the day they die. PLEASE!!! Keep your cat indoors! Especially this time of year

Cats have a great sense of awareness and won't go any further than they feel necessary. They will remember how to get home, home finding is like a second nature to them.

Cats are remarkable animals & they have a built in sense of where home is. Are you sure you want your cat to roam outside? They can get tangled up with dogs, skunks, other cats, etc.

Sure and you can send your kids into the woods with bread crumbs to find their way home too. Are you serious? Cat know where home is and if they like their home they'll come back.
