The way I used to clean my room when I was a teen is to take everything off the walls/shelves/closet and put it on the floor. Then I would clean the closet/shelves/walls by dusting and wiping down with a anti-bacterial cloth. Then I would slowly put everything back and organize as I went along.

Now that I am older I can tell you that I hated cleaning my room and wish I would have organized it in a way that I would not have to work so hard each time I had to do it.

Tips:
End clutter mess for good.
Get some under the bed storage boxes to store things that you do not need to be 'displayed' in the room like shoes.
Get small plastic shoe boxes for the closet and label them for storing things like hair stuff, belts, scarves, holdiday stuff, pictures, small electronics, keepsakes, important papers, ...........anything you want.

Unless it is part of the room 'decor' ... it should not be out and visible. Hide it away in a storage system that is easily accessible when you need it.

Also... get shelving that goes verticle. Less big chunky furniture... go UP. The most wasted space in a room is half-way between floor and ceiling....it is a dead zone. Use it up. There are many cheap cheap cheap storage options at places like Target, Wal-Mart, K-Mart....there are blocks of storage items that can be stacked as high as you need them to go. They run about $30 a piece and are worth every penny.

Use the back of closet doors to put hooks for hanging items. Use hangers to hang plastic bags....(the type you get from the grocery store with the little handles on them).... to store various items such as gloves and hats for winter.

Good luck ... I hope this helped.

Take it slowly. Decide what you want to achieve, and think about where you want stuff to live.

The easiest thing if you have plenty of time is first to pick up everything off the floor and under the bed. Have a large trash bag, and be fairly ruthless about throwing out anything that's rubbish, or broken. Have another bag or a box for stuff that you don't like, or will never use, but which someone else might like, and keep that for a thrift store or charity shop. Have another box for things you do want to keep, but don't yet have places for, and make sure that everything else goes away.

Once you have the floor clean, and all that stuff sorted, get rid of the bag of trash, and the box of stuff to give away. Then vacuum or mop the floor, then give yourself some kind of treat like a chocolate bar.

Then you need to figure out what else needs to be sorted - maybe desk drawers, or closets, or your bookcase... whatever it is, use the same method. Take everything out, nd sort it into one of those four categories. This should be easier since some of the stuff should be able to go straight back where it came from unless you're really messy!

You can do this one spot at a time, or all at once, depending on how motivated you are and how much free time you have. Always keep in mind the finished room and how it's going to look, and don't get distracted by reading books or magazines, or getting involved in anything else you come across. But do take breaks every so often - every half an hour, perhaps, if you're tidying/sorting for a long period.

1] do under bedfirst. Fish out all debris - put all clothes in laundry baskets, all trash in black plastic bags, and maybes in cardboard boxes.
2] then do closet, dressers, floor
3] sort all belongings into keep [ find a place, and keep it there ] donate, or throw away
4] be ruthless - if it doesn't fit, isn't your color, or you don't like it very much, GET RID OF IT! Applies to clothes, books, music, electronics, videos, etc.
5] after tossing trash, and donating surplus [ clean, please! ]
organize closet by groups -
a] tops - blouses, jackets, blazers
b] bottoms - pants, jeans, skirts
c] dresses
d] any long gowns
e] coats
6] all robes, hoodies should be on a hook or a hanger
7] get shelf dividers for closet - store handbags, hats/scarves/gloves, sweats, Tshirt stacks
8] shoe rack[s] for floor of closet - winter shoes, every day shoes, athletic shoes, summer shoes
9] underbed storage for extra items
10] organize dresser - bras/panties/hose/slips?; pjs, tops, pants, exercise wear
