No. You can not get closer to god by climbing any statue or social ladder. You can only get closer to God by reading His Word, prayer and following His teachings.
Strangely, I have found that the closer I get to God, the more fault I see within myself and perceive my own shortcomings. I have a greater understanding of my own failures and unworthiness. But I also gain a greater appreciation of His grace and mercy in that in spite of all I have done or failed to do, He still wants me to dwell with Him and He paid my debts of sin so that I will be drawn to Him when I die.
