Here is a explanation using the book of James
James 1:
12 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.
It is very tempting to believe the smooth lies of the deciever and who he sends to teach the twisted doctrines.
-------
James 1:
13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: 14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.
If we are of God and a disciple of Jesus we cannot be tempted by the adversary and his minions. The old dragon tempts people that are lost, or in want, or lonely. These are states a person may be in and can only be filled with God.
Satan tempts people with many things one is "eternal life" and Jesus states that they who love their life will loose it. So this temptation of eternal life is in opposition to God.
-------
James 1:
15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.
This verse is further confirmation. Lust is desire and desiring that of the physical. Sin is separation from God.
Many cults and sects concieve of their own mind and desire to control and manipulate others. To gain rank and recognition among men. False prophets have three forms of sin. One is pride and they excuse and blame the follower, another is self righteousness and condemning others by judgement and only Jesus acts as judge so they sin by not being loving which is a commandment of Jesus. Third is following their own ideas and not staying with God's Word. They translate and interpet as they want and wish in their own heart. Using a verse here and a verse there to justify their desires(lusts).
-------
James 1:
16 Do not err, my beloved brethren. 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
Here in verse sixteen God and His Light does not vary as in doctrinal changes. God Almighty's Word is always the same and not open to change. God's word is sealed. Only one thing - If a person is in the process of being a student they are not yet qualified to be teachers and should not teach what they are blind to for darkness does not understand the Light.
False Prophets are unqualified to teach because they do not have the Light of God and they bring "ruin" upon themselves and their followers.
Any prediction that is not fulfilled shows there is no Light of God. The moment that a thought is concieved in the mind even before it comes out of the mouth they have sinned. Jesus states that it is not what a person takes in but what comes from their mouth. And lies come from false prophets showing that they are of their father the liar.

I have noted that anyone claiming on TV or in the media that they have made a "Mistake" is actually a person who was engaged in what they took pleasure in or got some sort of gain by it and then have finally been caught and held accountable.
How many times have we heard how sorry I am, or how I have cheated you? Well we only hear about it when they get caught. I have yet to see some one with a secret come out and say, look I've been doing this, against our beliefs and no I have not been caught but I realize how bad it is and I want to claim my faults and come clean?
Never.
Mistakes are a one time deal that causes hurt or embarrassment. False prophecy is intentionally misleading people to fleece them.

Actually at the point of the "mistake".
If there is truly a word/direction/rule from God, then it would never be a "mistake" on down the road.
The Bible says these false prophets will burn:
When they say that "the Holy Spirit" told them to do or say something, but then later the "prediction" did not come true
or
they change the rule they 1st said came from God
or
anything that a leader or "prophet" says that contridicts the Gospel.
Wolves in sheeps clothing. Hmmmm? Sound like any people we know?

The moment that the prophecy doesn't line up with the Word of God. That is why the Bible warns us of False Preachers and False Doctrine in the Last Days. We are to all soak ourselves in the Word of God so as not to be drawn into False Doctrine. We are to Watchmen. We are to point out False Doctrine and False Prophets. All of these Mega Churches, preaching a self help message is only leading souls to Hell.

GOD doesnt make mistakes. When HE speaks to a prophet HE makes it CLEAR what HE wants said.
When people make prophecies and they fail to come to pass, they are a false prophet according to Moses.
GOD says NOT to listen to them. Now if there is a CONDITION to be met , for instance destruction will not occur if the people repent, otherwise it will come to pass if they don't repent, then thats on the people not the prophet.
If it is a set in stone thing like when oral Roberts said GOD would take him home kill him etc if he didnt get the money he needed for the project they were doing, then rest assured something is wrong.

never; as if they could admit to saying false things. By saying mistake, it means they could have gotten a message from above but interpreted it wrong. Admitting a false prophecy means the religious leader has no real tie to the deity and perhaps the deity isn't even real.

all people make mistakes, even religious leaders. if some one is studying the bible and comes to believe something they( the religious leader) might teach it to his flock as the truth. if he later realizes he was wrong but for what ever reason keep teaching it as the truth, this would be false prophecy.

Beware false prophets is the key- to be honest though certain quote unquote mistakes may actual be beneficial.
A "mistake" may not actually be wrong- even in terms of science 'All hail the atom!', penecillin was discovered by mistake.
I dislike the phrase mistake almost as much as I dislike the phrase useless- who are we to determine that something or someone doesn't have a use.
Who is to say that some of our prescribed uses aren't actually highly damaging in the long-term, sin can be normalised.

A false prophecy is when they claim God told them. Mistakes is when someone makes a prediction (their opinion) that didn't come true.
