“And do not call anyone on earth father, for you have one Father, and he is in heaven” (Matthew 23:9)

God is speaking of spiritual matters and says something similar regarding caling people rabbi's

So if the catholic churhc insists on calling preists fathers are they not disobeying what Jesus has said

If they have a reason for this, are they still not disobeying what Christ has said?

Disregarding Jesus’ words, the Catholic Church gives the title “Father” to all of her priests, and “Holy Father” to the Pope. “Holy Father” is used only once in the entire Bible and it is a reference to God (John 17:11). Moreover, "holy" is a title reserved to God alone, “Who shall not fear You, O Lord, and glorify Your name? For You alone are holy” (Revelation 15:4).

So who to beleive, an organisation that says, we have a reason to call priests fathers even thoguh Jesus said we should not?

Or the bible, the word of God, which tells us not to do it?

On the subject of murder and the spanish inquistion, did they have all the more authority to disobry the commandments and murder as many chrisitans as they wanted as they would not convert to catholicism

Um... and what do you call the guy who fathered you? So if you ever referred to him as "father," "dad," "pops," "daddy," or "papa," you're going against the Bible too.

So from now on, you have to call your father by his first name because Jesus said not to call anyone on earth father.

Who to believe? A biological sire who wants you to call him a forbidden name even though Jesus said we should not?

Or the bible, the word of God, which tells us not to do it?

Awaiting your answer.

Maybe it's because this 'organisation' as you call it put the Bible together in the first place and is best qualified and has the authority to do so!

Sorry but the Spanish Inquisition was political and not carried out with the approval of the Catholic Church- only certain individuals took it upon themselves-not being rude but you appear anti!!

I was once in a Bible study class with a priest. Someone else asked the question, "If we aren't supposed to worship idols, then why do we have all those statues we kneel to? That's like idol worship."

And Father Wright said, "You're right. I don't know why."

I admired his honesty.

Only God is our Father. You are so right!
They do it because they ignore God's Holy Word, and rely on their own man made doctrine. What other reason could there possibly be? If the words are in the Bible, and are ignored, then they are not following God, but their own ways. I would be very afraid when I had to stand in front of Jesus Himself, and they will, they will!

Edit: The Bible is speaking of the "reverant" form of Father, not your earthly father who sired you. The Bible speaks about your earthly father, also. Even in the Commandments. "Honor your mother and father" This "father" is NOT in the same context as our Holy Father, God. I just wanted to clear that up for those who didn't know that, or understand what you are talking about in this context of "Father."
It is not the same as when a priest gives himself the title of Father. Or they call the Pope, Holy Father. They are using it in a reverant context, and that is WRONG! Only ONE is Holy enough to be called that! God Bless

you are totally correct, just as in Bible times during Jesus day and beyond, there were those who got into the congregations there and did not practice what the the bible really taught, they sought to seek glory for themselves, and in turn many were sadly mislead. They took on traditions of men and worship that wasn't pure, incorporating idolatry and teachings that were not in line with the Bible's true meanings. Those things have continued to our day.

That is why it's just so important for all of us to study, to research to learn what the Bible truly has to say and ask questions. If you feel that what you are being taught isn't right, and isn't what you've learned from the Bible, then find a group who truly believes and has made their values and actions a way of life. We surely don't want to be a part of the scriptures below of those who are part of misleading ones.

(Proverbs 6:16-19) . . .There are six things that Jehovah does hate; yes, seven are things detestable to his soul: 17 lofty eyes, a false tongue, and hands that are shedding innocent blood, 18 a heart fabricating hurtful schemes, feet that are in a hurry to run to badness, 19 a false witness that launches forth lies, and anyone sending forth contentions among brothers.

(Proverbs 12:22) . . .False lips are something detestable to Jehovah, but those acting in faithfulness are a pleasure to him.

(Matthew 7:15-17) . . .“Be on the watch for the false prophets that come to YOU in sheep’s covering, but inside they are ravenous wolves. 16 By their fruits YOU will recognize them. Never do people gather grapes from thorns or figs from thistles, do they? 17 Likewise every good tree produces fine fruit, but every rotten tree produces worthless fruit;

(2 Peter 2:1) . . .However, there also came to be false prophets among the people, as there will also be false teachers among YOU. These very ones will quietly bring in destructive sects and will disown even the owner that bought them, bringing speedy destruction upon themselves. . .

(2 Peter 2:1) . . .However, there also came to be false prophets among the people, as there will also be false teachers among YOU. These very ones will quietly bring in destructive sects and will disown even the owner that bought them, bringing speedy destruction upon themselves. . .

Qualities of True Christans, are found at :

(John 13:35) . . .By this all will know that YOU are my disciples, if YOU have love among yourselves.”

Jesus here showed that genuine love was to be the identifying mark of his true disciples. The apostle John appreciated this identifying mark of Christianity so much that he highlighted it, not only in his Gospel account, but also in his letters. The first letter of John, for example, is really an expression of John’s love for his Christian brothers. It was written to protect them from the false teachings of antichrists in his day. Also throughout the letter John emphasizes God’s love, showing how Christians should copy this outstanding quality of Almighty God, Jehovah.

It's amazing how many people have such a problem obeying a simple directive. So many clergymen feel what Jesus said does NOT apply to them. Are they correct.?

It would be good to read and note the context of Matthew 23:1-12. Jesus begins speaking about the Pharisees, who were a prominent sect of Judaism. They were legalists, sticklers for observance of every detail of the Mosaic Law. They liked to dress and act in such a way as to call attention to themselves. Their religion was one of ostentation—their style of clothing, their principal places at meals, their front seats in the synagogues, and their titles of honor. They even claimed greater respect than that which was given parents. They wanted to be called father. However, Jesus shows that all his followers are equal as God’s children. Any title that suggests the opposite is a haughty usurpation of something that belongs to God. Thus, Jesus forbids the use of the word “father” as a title of honor in a religious sense. Jesus insists that his followers have only one Father in the faith, Jehovah.

To justify using the title "father," clergymen point to Paul's words at 1 Tim. 4:15: "For though you may have ten thousand tutors in Christ, you certainly do not have many fathers; for in Christ Jesus I have become your father through the good news."

Paul was not using the term “father” as a title, but as an illustration. He was using the earthly relationship in the human family to show the true picture of his position relative to the Corinthian Christians. Nowhere is he addressed as Father Paul. Peter referred to him as “our beloved brother Paul”. (2 Pet. 3:15) None of the apostles were ever addressed with the title Father. For them to be so addressed by others would have violated Jesus’ command: “Do not call anyone your father on earth, for One is your Father, the heavenly One.” The context shows he was objecting to flattering titles. (Job 32:21, 22; Matt. 23:6-12) Hence Paul’s use of the illustration “father” to accurately portray his relationship to Christian congregations and individuals, and not as a creature-exalting title, was no violation of Matthew 23:9.

The 'Father' at the church is a medium or pathway to develop a dialogue or relationship with God, and therefore is called 'Father'. The concept has been around for many centuries.
