I put a over tablespoon instead of a teaspoon. I have 7 large yams is that too much?

Taste it. Everyone is different. If you want to lose some of the flavor then add a little more broth or water and then cook for a few more minutes. That will burn off some of the vanilla.

It may be OK- you may need to improvise though, by adding more sugar, spices, or more "bulk"- if they are in pieces and you have made a glaze- you could just rinse them off and start again, but if you have mashed them and then added the vanilla- well taste it and see- if the vanilla flavor is too strong- add some applesauce or cooked mashed tart apples, or pears, or butternut squash- you really just need a puree of something to add to the yams to cut down the vanilla.

it's too much, but live and learn. this is what makes cooking fun. try a recipe in the future that doesn't involve sweetening the yams -they're perfect the way nature made them!
