Everyone should have the right to 'check out' whatever age they are. It's up to the individual whether to live or die. Nobody ever went to prison for commiting suicide.

In theory, yes. The practical problem is how to create safeguards. A friend of mine, Lord Joffe, introduced the 'assisted dying' bill into the House of Lords but it didn't get enough support to get even close to becoming law.
I think we all recognise that we have to be sure that the person has made the choice without any pressure and it is here that the difficulty comes. What safeguards can be put in place to prevent it becoming the accepted norm so that people who choose not to 'check out' don't feel that they are being unreasonable?

I think so, but the problem is that you don't know if the person still has their faculties intact, and once you start letting other people make decisions on whether or not to check people out, you potentially open the floodgates for a wealth of abuses.

I totally agree that death with dignity should be available to anyone who is terminally ill.
I'm not sure that I agree with you if the the person is just bored with life.

I wish to life untill I can wipe my own bottom. That is what my grandfather wishes, and that is what I wish...
I totally agree that you have the right to check out. You would be a pain for your relatives and you would spend money on curing yourself (if you suffer from a disease). I'd like that when I'm gone, my family would remember me and cry for me and miss me. I would not want them to think "Thank God that woman stopped tiring herself and us"

My dad paid a horrendous price to fight cancer, a battle he ultimately lost. But, the last months of his life, though painful and to him, meaningless, were some of the most important months of my life, because of his example of bravery. Example never gets old, but quitting is never a good example.

Do you know how badly that can be miss used?
Also, what is the difference between this person and a suicidal teenager? Why do we help one and allow the other to die?
