I make it in a toaster oven.
EDIT: Someone said use Mayo instead of butter.. I just wanted to say that you do not heat up Mayo, this will make you so sick.

I spray one side of the bread with butter-flavored Pam (you could use butter if you want), then I put the buttered side down on a griddle. Once it's golden brown, I do the same with the second slice of bread. Then when the second slice is golden brown on one side, I spray the other side of the second slice, place it back on the griddle, place the cheese on the already toasted side and put the top slice down with the toasted side against the cheese. I spray the first slice (off the flame) and flip the sandwich over when the bottom is golden brown. Once all sides are golden, you are ready to serve. That gives a nice crunchy feel to the sandwich and the soft gooey feel of the cheese.
Sometimes spread mayonnaise on the toasted side that is against the cheese and when the sandwich is done, I'll gently remove the top and add a couple of very thin slices of tomatoes. Otherwise, if I just do it the way I stated above, I'll serve it with a nice bowl of tomato soup. I also sprinkle some shredded cheddar cheese over the top of the soup.
Enjoy!

Both ways, stovetop and oven/grill.
Stovetop in medium heated non stick pan, 2 slices white bread buttered and 1-1/2 slices Kraft processed cheese on the unbuttered side. Put the sandwich butter side down & allow to brown & then flip over to the other side buttered & allow to brown as well, the cheese has melted.
In the oven under the broiler, I like sliced crusty bread or rolls and slices of cheddar cheese on top with fresh cracked pepper and grill until the cheese bubbles & melts. Often I will top this one with pieces of bacon.

My Favorite way is getting really soft white sliced bread, butter the inside lightly and put 2 slices of cheddar in there. Melt some butter in a pan and place the sandwich in, then squish it down real hard with the spatula until its gone golden crispy on that side. Then butter the top side of the sandwich, flip it over, and push down again until the other side is brown and crispy too. Check that the cheese is melted, cut down the middle and serve with ketchup on the side!
