Perhaps this is just me, but Vista slowed down both my main PC and my new laptop horribly. Add to that the constant security alert frustrations, and I switched back to XP, with no more problems or slowdown. Some places allow you to transfer your XP over to your new PC along with your files, so you should ask if that could be the case for you wherever you buy it from (Best Buy gave me a hard time about it when I bought my laptop and tried to pull a "we only do Vista" line, but then I made it clear that they'd be losing a customer if they didn't cooperate). XP is just fine, I'm not noticing anything I'm missing out on. Just stick with it for now, I'm guessing that in a few months, Microsoft will be releasing patches to fix Vista, and then it'd be fine to transfer.
Premium is essentially a patch for their basic disguised as an upgrade. If you are going to go with Vista eventually, the patched version would be the way to go, with a focus on Windows Media Center and somewhat easier navigation.

Vista just plain sucks. Rumor has it that MS is supposed to be coming out with a service pack in the near future to correct this, but I have yet to see it. I bought my computer a year ago and it came with a "Free Express Upgrade to Windows Vista. I ended up "Upgrading" back to XP which was a b*tch to do, (had to get a special CD to do it), but there were too many problems with Vista. My step-son got a Vista laptop and he had to buy a new printer because the printer he had which was less than a year old did not work with Vista. He also had to get a new flash drive because the one he had which was only 2 months old did not work with Vista.

It depends what you like. What I mean is that vista has a tremendous amount of files, including video, songs, movies, clips, you get the point....... This means that your memory card will be PACK with ALOT of files. On the other hand, this makes the computer laggy. BUT XP has simple and short files which takes up little spaces on your memory card. Every program can be downloaded on the XP, but Vista is basically a new language. You must buy vista games or change the triggers of games, songs, etc. I recommend the XP. I've learned of an experience and learned how to use properly. I have 12 different computers that work fine. 3 Laptop vistas, 2 XP laptops, and 7 desktops which are XP. I really recommend the XP.

well I'll tell you right off the the bat don't get basic vista... Its an empty OS... Now I have Vista Ultimate and have NO PROBLEMS at all. My computer runs fast, it never hangs up, I have no bugs or anything... So when people say bad things about vista I have no clue where they are getting it from.
Premium is just like Ultimate in almost everyway. Except I think Ultimate has a couple more security features i.e your laptop gets stollen... anyways if your completly satisfyed with xp I see no reason for you to update. If your getting a little tired of xp you should get the vista laptop. It has a couple cool new features like the 3D window switcher and Vista DVD maker. and when you change the theme on the computer to Vista Aero it looks really nice.

I have two computers running Vista and they are FAST. I like Vista a whole lot better than XP. Although, if I was you I would check out Apple. My next computer I buy will be a Apple becuase I like Mac better than PC. But its your choice.
Obviously, the diffrence is in price. If I was you I would get the one step up from Basic, I can think of what they call it.

Vista is way too buggy at the moment, as is Office 2007 and IE7. You'll end up spending more time fixing Vista issues than getting any work done.
XP will be around for quite a while yet.

I'm not sure about the difference between vista basic and premium, you should probably ask someone who works for the desktop company. That's what they're there for!
Well, I just switched from HP to Vista, and personally.. I love it! It runs so much faster! Also, they changed some things and the whole computer is easier to navigate around.
hope this helps (:

Vista takes a while to get used to. There are alot of stuff that is different and is hard to get used to, such as Internet explorer.
But it is sorta old to have XP. I'm not even sure if its very easy to get XP anymore.
But if you can get ahold of XP, then i think you should get it. XP seems to be easier to use.
Whatever you're used to. If you're used to running with XP or lower, than go for XP.
But if you have Vista on your old computer, get vista.
