The Birth of Jesus was probably in March, so your question should be = "why is Christmas no where near the birth of Christ?"
Indeed, some churches celibate Christmas on 7th of January.
It only makes sense when you understand the history of Christianity. When the Romans adopted Christianity to unite the collapsing empire, they needed to give it credence. One way was to use the old pagan feast days. Christmas was Saturnalia. It was to celibate the return of the sun (the days getting longer). New Year was set the Romans in 153 BC.

It isn't. If jesus really existed at all (there is some doubt as he seems to be a re-run of an earlier pagan god called Mithras) then most religious scholars agree his time of birth was around September.
Christmas was not actually celebrated at all until some 300 years after jesus' alleged birth.
25th December was celebrated as a pagan festival marking the shortest day and the turning of the seasons long before christianity. When the early christian church decided to usurp the pagan religions they imposed their own celebration on the same day, taking the birth of jesus as the nearest major date in their calendar.

Christ's birth wasn't December 25th. That date was assigned by the Roman Catholic church. More than likely, he was born in the Spring. (not in Kislev, the rainy season of the Hebrew calendar, from Nov-Dec, when shepherds are not in the fields).
And for that matter, the new year hasn't always been January 1st. That was assigned by Julius Casear in 45BC. Prior to that, most cultures celebrated it on March 25th.

He wasn't born on the 25th. Or in December for that matter. Probably not at all.

if christ was 'born' and it was "when the farmers were in the field watching the livestock" as it is said, then it was actually some time in april may or june, because that is the only time farmers spend the night watching their livestock is in the spring- when their livestock gives birth.
