Sometimes my Springer Spaniel will do this in the middle of the night but there is always a good reason for her doing this. It's usually because she can hear a fox calling for its mate or a screechy Owl outside. She usually starts the rest of them off and they sound like a pack of wolves downstairs.
Drives me batty but at least I know why she does it.

Maybe one of your dogs can hear something outside which you are unable to hear, like a Fox barking somewhere or another dog barking in the distance.

Dogs don't howl cause they see spirits or anything like that. Dogs howl to notify other dogs of things.. Either they are lost, or lonely, or they found the food, or warning of danger ... Has nothing at all to do with spirits or anything so ridiculous.

Dogs are descended from wolves. It's normal.

Dogs are a pretty unique animal, I say this because...Dogs can tell when other "spirits" are in the house. If your home had been lived in before you and that person has definetly died now, she/he could be still living in the house. Not to scare you though...Good Luck.

to the answer above me i agree its kind of spooky. I believe dogs can see spirits too my dog always stares at nothing. He'll follow something down teh stairs with his eyes but when you look there will be nothing there. Sometimes after following something down the stairs with his eyes he will run away with his tail between his legs because hes scared. Maybe your dogs seeing spirits! :O
