When a name varies from the societal norm you have to expect it. My grandmother still, after 25 years, spells my daughter's name wrong (Cyndi). She spells it Cindy--the "normal spelling."

Pretty much always. My name is Stacymay; people tend to spell it Stacey May, Stacey Mae, etc. I can't remember the last time someone got it right, if ever. That's why at my job I almost always ask how people's names are spelled because it's so annoying to have mine spelled incorrectly on some official document, lol.

Some people are just too lazy to care about getting names correct. I tried for years to get people to spell my Gaelic first name correctly and have finally given up. Now I've made it even harder for others by having a Japanese last name. I just let it wash over me. Personally, Catie, I think it's important to get names right and I always make the effort but I've learned I can't control other people so I just live with their imperfections. After all, others have to live with mine.

You know there are many people who don't care how ppl spell there name, aslong as it follows politeness, there should be no problem...
But if you are suffering a real problem or phase, try correcting someone, and when you do, politely ask them to repeat it, untill they get it right..
It is important in some legal situations, my name was spelt differently in the classroom register, and then when I finally got my name changed, my exams already went through... so it almost because a lawsuit, but the exam board were very polite in correcting their mistake... but why go through it in the first place..
Just make sure people know who you are... wear a name tag for the day if it helps... and make sure people know!!

I too have a non-standard spelling of my name.
You should not feel ashamed - you are not the one who doesn't know how to spell your name. Most people don't know how important or unimportant they are to other people, however, you do. There are 2 reasons people spell your name right. 1) They know you well and therefore know how to spell it. 2) They don't know you at all, looked it up off of a list, and didn't "correct" the misspelling. Everyone inbetween is going to misspell it. So, if they spell it wrong, it tells you something about how they feel about you (perhaps they aren't as good of friends with you as you thought, etc.).

you need to start writing your name really large on things around your home. Like the walls, doors, book covers....any blank canvas until the message sinks in.
Okay seriously just be bold and correct those folks the next time they mispell your name. Say something like, with all due respect please not that this:"Catie"is the correct spelling of my name, or keep saying: it's Catie with a C, every time you intro yourself.

A few months ago at my job my manager just learned how to spell my name correctly and I have worked for him over 3 1/2 years. They will eventually get it.

you have a common name with a different spelling. your parents were just asking for this to happen when they couldn't spell it katie. you honestly cannot expect everyone to get the spelling right. try having two unique names: first and last. my first name is branda. not brenda, brandon, or brandi. my last last name was even more unique and not common. when someone would say my name or attempt to, I knew they were speaking to me and did not correct them. Now, if they would happen to ask if they pronounced it right I would smile and correct them. It really is not that important.

Accept that you have an unusual name and that even the best meaning person will probably mess it up and being upset by it will only make you look like a jerk. Find a nice way to keep reminding them and hope one day they will get it but there's nothing you can do really except be graceful about it.
