I need to take 3 days off to care for an ailing relative returning from the hospital. I have 2 weeks vacation time beginning at the start of the new year, if I chose to take the rest of the week off (since the first is a holiday) can my job have me fired? They are aware of the seriousness of this relatives condition but I have only worked there 8 months - though I had a satisfactory probation period. I am eligible for most benefits now including vacation, which I was able to start after 6 months of service. Should I take the time or not risk it?

I would definitely talk to someone, I would never just not show up at work. My boss is on vacation until the 7th but reachable by email and pager. He approved one day as an emergency personal day but he is unaware of the additional time, as I just found out about the complications of surgery which were not expected.

It is always difficulty when medical emergencies come up. Talk to your boss. I don't know about your state, but mine is a 'right to work' (a.k.a right to fire) state. They can fire you for any/no reason. You should contact your boss, since they are aware of the situation, and tell them what you would like to do. Many companies require an advance notice (i.e 1 month) when requesting vacation time. However, you may be able to request personal days and use the vacation time to cover your hours. Hope this helps!

You should talk to the Human Resources office for your company and ask. Likely there are steps that you have to go through to get time off approved. I don't recommend that you simply "take the time" and don't go into work this week and expect that your company will count this towards your vacation time.

Hope this helps.

Have you asked your boss for the time off? They might be willing to let you borrow vacation time from 2008, or just take the time without pay. But if you just don't show up, they probably would fire you, so be sure you have permission.

Didn't you just ask this last night?

As I stated then, if you have the time available, then you can take it.

Not sure why you are so paranoid about this. Have you never had vacation before?

Do you work for the government? Is that why you can't take time off for your first six months?
