OK, my puppy is a newfie/saint mix (3 months old) and on "nice" day (like mid 20's or higher, not a lot of wind) he loves to be outside all the time. This includes wanting to go outside just to laydown. For example, our backdoor is fenced in, so he will come and laydown on the stoop and go to sleep, but if you try to call him in, he walks away and goes to lay down in the snow. Is this normal for this breed(s) of dog? Is it ok to let him sleep outside for a little bit during the day on nice days? I do check on him about every 10 minutes and we don't force the dogs to go outside except when they are playing and get pretty rowdy. Also, we always try to be outside with out dogs, since my smallest is a little escape artist, but do I need to be outside if he is just laying down right outside the door? Also, he will let me know when he wants to come in by either going from laying down to sitting when I come to the door or pawing at the door. Thanks!

sun_and_moon_1973 - I am getting a Keeshond mix this weekend (we are adopting him and going to go pick him up) so maybe my puppy will have company now! Our other dog is little so he doesn't like being out for too long during the winter because he gets cold pretty quick despite a decent fur coat.

I own both the breeds that make up your little cutie and reside in New England where it can get quite chilly! Both my Saint and my Newf (more my Newfie) LOVE nothing more then spending the day (or most of the day) outside. They often nap outside during the day. The weather does not bother them at all. My Newfie is happiest in rain! And my Saint is happiest in the snow! So, yes... it is VERY normal for both breeds!!

P.S. The 'not coming in when called' ordeal is the Newf in your dog!

There are 2 sides to this The people who have dogs that are house trained who will say bring them in and those that are working or either prefer to keep them outside I have both The ones that are outside have their own kennels and they are fine I check them through the winter and they dont need heat lamps they dont loose weight and are more healthy than the ones indoors. But -19 is a bit cold Blankets attract the cold hay or straw would be best Indoor/outdoor dog now your talking rubbisIts either one or the other You will confuse the dog

As long as he has water and he is let in when he wants/needs to come in he should be fine. Those breeds have tons of hair that keep them warm and will often times just go lay in the sun. I have a Keeshond that loves to just lay outside when it is cooler out.

He probally likes being outside because he enjoys it. Remember dogs heva a fur coat and what may be very cold to you maybe comfy for them. I don't see anything wrong with him being out there as long as you let him in when he wants to come in.

What a great parent you are!! To be so worried about your babe like you are!! I would say, you are doing the right thing already, by letting him go outside when he wants, and letting him come back in when he wants! I would not think it is necessary to stay out the entire time he is out there! Good Luck to you and your babe!!!!

Don't worry. As long as he let you know he want to come in, there nothing wrong with being outside all the time.

Newfs and Saints were made for colder temperatures and snow. They were rescue dogs in mountains and in northern places. Just make sure that when he gets up to come inside just let him in.

If he gets cold - he'll ask to come in. I see no problem with him being out if he wants to be.
