I am fostering a momma dog (Beagle) with four puppies, about 10 days old now. They started having runny noses about 5 days ago and have been on antibiotics (Amoxicillin- drops) for 4 days now. My question is when they will stop having the runny nose. Since antibiotics only prevent the cold from becoming a bacterial infection and does not cure the cold or the symptoms, when will the symptoms go away or better yet... when will they get better? Please any honest answers are greatly apreciated. Thanks in advance! 10 pts- best and honest answer!

The vet at the animal shelter that I am fostering them for is the one that prescribed the meds. Since today is Sunday and they are closed until wednesday for New Years I cannot ask them. The puppies are not in dying or anything I just want to know when they will start getting better!!??

Is the nasal discharge clear or coloured? If it is clear, I wouldn't be too worried. It is normal for dogs to have moisture on their noses, especially nursing pups. If it is coloured, though, that would indicate an infection that needs to be treated more aggressively. Just keep a close eye and talk to the vet when s/he returns.

Edit: It's hard to tell when it will stop, it all depends on the cause/severity of the infection.

I have a beagle and she gets a runny nose all the time. You have to ask yourself? What is the weather like or what is the temperature of my home? If you take the dog out and its cold and maybe it runs around and gets worked up and you come inside and its warm it can give the dog a cold. Running around is the main thing. My beagle loves to run and its cold where I live so I have to keep my house warm and thats what happens a runny nose. Just monitor the activity of the dog. It should be better within a week. Colds aren't serious at all espically if its on antibiotics. Happy New Year!

Is a vet treating them? Did a vet prescribe the antibiotics? If not, please call a vet because the puppies are too young to improvise. If yes, call him anyway to learn what he thinks about their progress.
